WHO DO YOU LOVE

RYAN: Who Do You Love is a new movie based on the story of Chess Records and how The Blues broke into mainstream music.

CAROLINE: Another similar movie came out recently, courtesy of the likes of Beyonce and Adrien Brody. That was called Cadillac Records.

RYAN: Right. We didn’t see that one and I really liked this one. It’s stylish, dramatic; obviously the music is great but the story is compelling too.

CAROLINE: It must be, to warrant two films within a year of each other. But I remember reading somewhere that Who Do You Love is very loosely based on the truth.

RYAN: Well it may be the better for it. I like something to happen when I see a movie and the drama here is brought!

CAROLINE: So if this one doesn’t have Beyonce, who’s in it?

RYAN: It stars Alessandro Nivola who we lovingly remember as Amy Adams’ brother-in-law in Junebug.

CAROLINE: Yes. He’s good and cute-ish.

RYAN: I like him a lot. He just needs to change his name.

CAROLINE: [laughs’ Okay. He is married to Emily Mortimer.

RYAN: Oh that’s right. They’re so under the radar.

CAROLINE: Anyone else worth mentioning?

RYAN: Not really. But the movie is carried just fine without names. It’s like you’re peering through a window or taken back in time to see this historic event. It chronicles Muddy Waters, etc… We see the birth of the song At Last, but it’s not Etta James singing so I didn’t quite get that.

CAROLINE: Sounds pretty good.

RYAN: I think you really would have enjoyed it too. I liked it on several levels… for the family story and struggle behind the creation of Chess Records; the way the music business used to operate; the time period; the relationship drama… all good.

CAROLINE: I could get on board.

— BOTTOM LINE —

RYAN: While it’s not a must see in the theater, it’s definitely enjoyable if you like music or want a decent drama.
