VINCE VAUGHN’S WILD WEST COMEDY SHOW: 30 DAYS AND 30 NIGHTS – HOLLYWOOD TO THE HEARTLAND
RYAN: Who doesn’t love a good larf? We certainly do and that’s why we enjoyed “Vince Vaughn’s Wild West Show.” Wait, is that what it’s called?
CAROLINE: Not quite. The full title is “Vince Vaughn’s Wild West Comedy Show: 30 Days and 30 Nights – Hollywood to the Heartland.”
RYAN: I like my title for it better.
CAROLINE: It’s quite a mouthful. And I personally took offense that they didn’t take the tour to the East Coast; then I realized that the title said “Wild West” and I shut up.
RYAN: The tour went so far as the Midwest and they showed little bits in each city; except for my hometown of Milwaukee and the city I went to college in, Madison. They just glossed right over those.
CAROLINE: Oh please, they glossed over a bunch of cities. They can’t cover all 30. Then the movie would have been 4 hours long, and it already felt a tad too long as it was.
RYAN: The movie is about comedians on the road but it also has heart. It was shot in 2005 and was nice to see how they helped the Katrina victims giving free tickets to their show. And it was funny seeing Justin Long on tour with them before he was Drew Barrymore’s boyfriend or the Justin Long of “Live Free or Die Hard” fame.
CAROLINE: I don’t think he was even Justin “I’m a Mac” Long yet at that point. He was pretty unknown.
RYAN: There are some great surprises in this movie, and some cool cameos. BTW Ralphie from “A Christmas Story” is in it; I think he’s Vince’s ‘Gayle King.’ He’s on the Vince pay roll and they’re doing great things together. The moral of the story here is that it pays to befriend a major Hollywood star.
CAROLINE: Cut to me having coffee with Kate Hudson tomorrow.
RYAN: [laughs’ You better invite me.
CAROLINE: Overall, I enjoyed this movie; though my one beef is that there are zero women in it, other than the ones who flirt with Vince and the comics on tour. Show us some lady comics! I don’t think this movie is going to get a huge release given that it’s a documentary and LBH, most people want their Vince Vaughn in a “Wedding Crashers” type movie.
RYAN: But I laughed just as hard in this as I’ve laughed in any scripted comedy lately. If you like stand-up comedy, this is a really fun movie. It’s almost Judd Apatow funny.
CAROLINE: I liked learning something about each comic too. They do a little back-story on all four of them, and I found the one about the comic with the gay brother very poignant.
RYAN: Totally! And I really liked the gay jokes in his routine, which is a rare thing for me to say. I feel like this movie is Vince Vaughn’s “Truth or Dare,” but instead of gay backup dancers, he’s got straight comedians with him. He’s on the tour bus, he shows all the backstage, behind-the-scenes, stuff and it’s edited really smartly. Bottom line?
CAROLINE: I really liked it. I mean, I had no idea what to expect from a documentary about not-very-famous comics. The guys in it were really funny; not the funniest comics you’ve ever seen, but that’s the point because they’re up-and-coming. I appreciated Vince Vaughn helping out the little man.
RYAN: I was into it too. I think we’d both recommend it. Tom?
TOM: It was a classic comic journey.
RYAN: [laughs’ Literally!
