VACANCY
RYAN: We’ve just viewed one of the most terrifying horror films I’ve ever seen.
CAROLINE: Wow, that’s quite a bold statement. “Vacancy” was definitely scary and I’m surprised that it’s not doing better box office. The kids usually love these kinds of films. Maybe it would be doing better if the stars were in their teens instead of thirty-something.
RYAN: Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale – I like this casting; that they took two standard romantic comedy leads and put them in a horror flick.
CAROLINE: They play a husband and wife whose marriage is on the rocks, and they get involved in this hideous murder game, which is just terrifying.
RYAN: What’s most frightening about it is that what happens to them could actually happen to anyone in real life.
CAROLINE: Sure, in theory. It starts out with them just driving on a road and bickering, and you’re not really sure when the games are going to begin. But then when they do – hello!!
RYAN: It makes me rethink my opinions on horror films because we’re used to seeing ones that just aren’t that scary. And then you see one like this, which is terrifying, and I feel like I didn’t enjoy it as much because I was truly scared.
CAROLINE: This movie doesn’t have bells and whistles – no monsters, no special effects, just a really scary scenario in a creepy motel. Whew, did it make me uncomfortable!
RYAN: On a special note, the director’s first name is Nimrod.
CAROLINE: I did notice that and I’m going to assume that he’s from a foreign country where that word doesn’t carry the same meaning.
RYAN: He did a great job directing. Even the early scenes in the car had some really creative shots the likes of which we’ve never seen before.
CAROLINE: Luke and Kate are both excellent, especially Kate.
RYAN: I was pleased to hear that her American accent was very decent. Her bum looked small too.
CAROLINE: Yes, and that’s very important to her so I’m glad you noticed. Luke looks a little puffy, but I guess that’s his lot in life, isn’t it?
RYAN: Just puffy in the face – the rest of him was fine.
CAROLINE: I’d date him. He had cute shoes in this movie.
RYAN: I didn’t notice. But it had good lighting and a good soundtrack.
CAROLINE: It’s a fun horror flick but be prepared for some real thrills.
RYAN: And potential nightmares after seeing it. Bottom line?
CAROLINE: This was really good. I hated every minute of watching it, but I’d definitely recommend it.
RYAN: I was so scared that I found myself jumping at moments that weren’t even intended to be scary, like when she turns on the faucet.
CAROLINE: I yelled out loud at one point and the guy next to me laughed.
RYAN: I recommend this movie to thrill-seekers everywhere. Nice work Nimrod!
