TOOTH FAIRY
RYAN: I may have been the only person over the age of ‘tween who was looking forward to the new movie Tooth Fairy starring Dwayne Johnson.
CAROLINE: You speak the truth. I could not have been cajoled to see this movie even with the promise of untold riches. And Julie Andrews.
RYAN: We all know you don’t like family films, but I know for a fact that you would have laughed at three moments in this one, if not more. It’s that cute.
CAROLINE: I highly doubt it; but let’s hear the rest of your assessment.
RYAN: Well, you would have loved every moment with Julie Andrews. Billy Crystal is also amazing. They steal every scene they’re in.
CAROLINE: Billy Crystal just looks so old to me lately. He’s so wrinkled and gray.
RYAN: Well, this just in, he’s aging. And he hasn’t had the work done that Julie Andrews has. But they’re both fantastic and do a great job with these whimsical roles. You can totally tell Billy Crystal was ad libbing at times. And I just loved seeing Julie Andrews do her thing. They’re in far too few movies these days.
CAROLINE: Fair enough. How’s the premise? The trailer was just so ridiculous.
RYAN: I liked the trailer. The story is good. The Tooth Fairy is not a topic we’ve seen covered a lot in film. I think we all have our own personal stories about the Tooth Fairy. I believed for a long time. Do you have any stories about the Tooth Fairy from your childhood?
CAROLINE: Of course! I loved the Tooth Fairy. Don’t even get me started on the tears and devastation at finding out the truth. I was a sensitive child.
RYAN: This movie has all the magic that goes along with the Tooth Fairy; the wings, the fairy dust and all the great special effects that go along with it. This movie should become the definitive film on this topic for generations to come.
CAROLINE: Ha, yeah – only because there aren’t any other Tooth Fairy movies for it to compete with.
RYAN: My niece and nephew would love this. Dwayne Johnson is by no means a great actor, but kids aren’t picky in that way. He’s good enough in this role; and in the parts he’s not very good in, at least he’s hot. There’s a shirtless scene that made me smile in the dark.
CAROLINE: How are the kids in the movie? Are there several or is there a featured one?
RYAN: There are a few, but the two main ones play Ashley Judd’s kids and they’re very cute. Ashley Judd’s role is very silly and cliché though. And by the way, she has The New Face.
CAROLINE: Meaning?
RYAN: Madonna’s puffed out cheeks. She seems to have opted for that instead of a face lift.
CAROLINE: Ick! Remember when she used to be a hot romantic leading lady? Those days are gone, evidently.
RYAN: Getting back to the movie in general, there are a lot of cute lines about teeth like, “You can’t handle the tooth!” I loved it all.
CAROLINE: OK, we’ve clearly sunk to new comic lows here. I think you need to have your head examined.
RYAN: Trust me, it worked in context of the movie. Dwayne Johnson was totally able to sell those lines.
— BOTTOM LINE —
RYAN: It’s not a great movie, but it’s good and I wish there was another word for cute. It’s fun, funny, romantic… I loved the costumes and the magic and the moral, which is to believe in your dreams. I actually got the chills and misted up at the end. It really touched me.
CAROLINE: Did you accidentally take some estrogen pills this morning?
RYAN: [laughs’ I must have. But it’s a great movie for the kids. Enjoy!
