TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY
RYAN: Ok, I couldn’t wait to see this movie. The trailer looked genius and well, the cast, I mean come on!
CAROLINE: It does have a cast – Colin Firth, Gary Oldman, Mark Strong. I didn’t see it yet but I will soon. How did you like it?
RYAN: I didn’t.
CAROLINE: [laughs’ Oh no! Why?
RYAN: Well, the cast is good and maybe it made sense to them while they were making it; but this movie hardly makes any sense at all. It’s, like, the hardest to follow film I’ve ever seen. And not in a Lars Von Trier way.
CAROLINE: Wow. And that’s saying something. You’re always the one explaining to me what happened in a movie when I’m confused, so I’m sure you don’t make that statement lightly.
RYAN: I think there are several problems… the script, the editing, the shots. It just makes way too many assumptions that the audience is keeping up. And there are several flashback sequences but no devices to indicate a flashback so you sort of debate inside your head about when, or even if, certain scenes are taking place.
CAROLINE: Now I’m confused and I haven’t even seen the movie yet.
RYAN: Remember how Inception was intense and a bit hard to follow?
CAROLINE: OK. Understatement.
RYAN: This movie makes that one look like a nursery rhyme.
CAROLINE: Whoa. Alright then. At least tell me how you liked seeing the actors. I know you love Gary Oldman and Mark Strong.
RYAN: And Colin Firth, Ciarán Hinds, Tom Hardy, Jon Hurt… it is a terrific ensemble cast, but honestly I kept wavering between trying hard to follow it and kind of just not caring anymore.
CAROLINE: Boo, that sucks. I’m so glad I didn’t try to sit through it; I want to give it a shot though, so I’ll definitely go in not expecting to understand anything.
RYAN: That would be wise. This is a clear case of good trailer/bad movie. I mean, it has merit and style and there’s definitely some kind of story there, but I certainly didn’t get it.
