THE TIME TRAVELER’S WIFE
CAROLINE: “The Time Traveler’s Wife” is a new romantic drama starring one of our very favorite actresses, Rachel McAdams, and Eric Bana, who’s having a very big summer what with this movie and “Funny People.”
RYAN: We know how much we love Rachel when the very sight of her on the screen made you grab my arm and squeeze it.
CAROLINE: I love everything about her, and it’s so exciting to have her back in a romantic drama. She’s not in enough movies. I want more Rachel!
RYAN: Honey, she’s choosy about her projects.
CAROLINE: Well, she wasn’t that choosy about this one. Not that it’s bad; it’s just very sentimental and schmaltzy and dramatic. It’s based on a very popular book which neither of us has read. I loved certain things about it, but it’s a little over the top. I’d say it’s fine, but not great.
RYAN: I think she’s trying for “The Notebook” again.
CAROLINE: Both she and Eric Bana are great, as usual, and the fact that the two of them are in this movie is what made me enjoy it.
RYAN: He does a great American accent, and gives us full butt-al nudity consistently throughout the film. And the girl who plays the young Rachel McAdams is not only adorable, but also a great actress.
CAROLINE: There are three young girls in the movie, and they’re all so cute; but yes, the young Rachel was particularly good. I liked the premise of the time travel thing. It made for a very romantic albeit far-fetched love story.
RYAN: I was hoping for more science fiction. I wanted them to explain the time travel more and have cooler special effects than just watching him dissolve.
CAROLINE: Honey, it’s a romantic drama first and foremost. We chicks do not need to learn the science behind time travel, thank you very much. It’s just a movie about their crazy relationship and how his time traveling affects it.
RYAN: It really feels like a movie just about the two of them, but there are a couple of supporting characters… like Berger from “Sex and the City.”
CAROLINE: And Ned Ryerson from “Groundhog Day.” It’s an enjoyable movie, but it didn’t quite tug at the heartstrings like “The Notebook” did. However, that didn’t stop me from turning into a blubbering mess for the last few minutes of the movie.
RYAN: I love that you cried. If you hadn’t, that would have been a bad sign for this movie.
CAROLINE: [laughs’ I just can’t help myself sometimes. The ending was fabulous.
RYAN: The movie’s a decent length, but very slow-paced. It’s beautifully shot, and I loved the score.
CAROLINE: It has some good elements for sure; it’s just kind of a cheesy, improbable story. And it’s coming out in the middle of August which is a movie wasteland. “Sherlock Holmes” is going to be a much bigger movie for Rachel McAdams this year.
— BOTTOM LINE —
RYAN: It’s an OK movie, but not super intense or effects laden enough to merit a big screen viewing.
CAROLINE: Yeah, I can’t honestly tell people to rush out and see it, despite our love for Rachel. If you love her as we do, then you should see it. Otherwise it’s a good rental.
