THE SWITCH
RYAN: Who loves a romantical comedy more than you and I?
CAROLINE: No one. And one starring Jason Bateman is enough to make my toes curl.
RYAN: [laughs’ In The Switch, he’s paired with Jennifer Aniston, and they have surprisingly great chemistry as you pointed out to me during the movie.
CAROLINE: They really do, and I think this movie was a smart move for her. She’s done a lot of crappy studio comedies lately, so it’s nice to see her in a smaller film. It’s from the same producers as Juno and Little Miss Sunshine, so it’s got that semi-indie sensibility. It’s really smart and well written, and it feels more intimate than her recent broad comedies.
RYAN: I had a lot of fun at this movie, and we both laughed out loud several times. And as great as Jenny Ani and Jason Bateman are, their sidekicks are just as good. Juliette Lewis is such a scene stealer.
CAROLINE: I love her and I love it when she pops up in comedies like this. She’s so freaking funny.
RYAN: And she looks amazing. Then you’ve got Jeff Goldblum as Jason Bateman’s work buddy, and he’s hilarious too.
CAROLINE: The four of them are brilliantly funny; but to me, Jason Bateman really stole the show. He’s so natural and smooth in the role, while still being totally funny. He plays the character so well, and he’s loveable and hateable at the same time. Not to mention H-O-T.
RYAN: Jennifer Aniston’s looking good too, though in a few scenes she seemed to be having a Nicole Kidman moment.
CAROLINE: What was up with that?? She is so puffy in the face, like she’s had Juvéderm or Restylane injections or something. It’s not working for her at all. She’s too young for that crap.
RYAN: It’s Hollywood, honey. A woman in her 40s has to look young to compete. I think by and large she looked great, but there were definitely a few scenes where she was funky in the face.
CAROLINE: She still has that great head of hair though. Her colorist is working overtime. He deserves an Oscar.
RYAN: The movie’s premise is a little ridiculous, and the whole thing could have ended after a half hour if someone had just said something about the situation. But then of course we’d have lost the romantic tension and we’d have no movie. But it feels a little bit like a long sit-com in that way.
CAROLINE: The little kid is adorable. He plays the perfect little worrywart. The movie had some really heartwarming moments as well. I didn’t weep or anything, but I loved the sweet, tender scenes.
RYAN: That little boy is the cutest thing since Jonathan Lipnicki. And I loved the costumes, especially what Juliette Lewis wears at the conception party.
CAROLINE: I just loved this cast. It would have been a cute movie if it had random actors, but seeing these actors all together really worked for me. Everything just clicked.
— BOTTOM LINE —
RYAN: Like most romantic comedies, it’s not imperative that you see it in the theater; but this one is so enjoyable that there’s no reason not to. If you like rom coms, you won’t want to miss this one.
CAROLINE: It’s not phenomenal, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It doesn’t merit a big screen viewing the way an action movie does, but it’s really fun and a great date movie whether you’re in the theater or watching it at home. I promise you will laugh out loud.
