The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water Review
RYAN: I’m happy to welcome my nephew Noah to join me in this review.
NOAH: I love SpongeBob SquarePants. I feel like I’ve seen every episode and watched it my whole life. I was really excited to see this movie with you. The TV show is funny and I like that it has no point to anything.
RYAN: This one really did have a point. There’s a nice moral and the story really warrants the big screen adaptation. It’s the first time we see SpongeBob in live action, or with live action, rather. And the story certainly sustained the feature length. It’s a little bit of adventure and mystery; a great blending of animation, 3D, CGI and live action.
NOAH: It was a good movie because it did have more meaning than the TV show. And I didn’t see any of the others in the theater. I liked the other ones but this was cooler to see them in CGI animation and everything.
RYAN: Did you appreciate the moral of the story? There’s a good lesson. Did you pick up on that?
NOAH: About not being selfish and teamwork?
RYAN: That’s it. There was a lot of talking about teamwork.
NOAH: That’s important because you don’t always want to work alone and two heads can be better than one.
RYAN: Exactly! Some of the highlights for me were Antonio Banderas as the pirate. He was great and appropriately playing large, this is his “children’s theater” performance. I love him. He’s not in as much as he used to be.
NOAH: I don’t really know that actor but he was funny.
RYAN: I also really loved the two or three musical moments in the film. There’s a song about teamwork and then the theme song was cool.
NOAH: I love that theme song. He lives in a pineapple under the sea… I did think for the first time during this movie about what the heck is in a crabby patty that makes it so good?
RYAN: (laughs) That is a good question. Would you taste one if you could?
NOAH: Yeah I would.
RYAN: It’s probably just hamburger meat with some crab mixed in.
NOAH: Oh gross. I eat crab but can’t imagine that. Maybe there are sea cows.
RYAN: It’s obviously a much bigger scale that then TV series.
NOAH: My friends all wanted to some to this screening with us. They all jumped and wanted to come but I’m gonna go see it again with them.
RYAN: It definitely appeals to the kids, but most adults have seen or are at least familiar with this character, so it’s easy to watch. It’s a light, well done 90 minutes.

I was never into the show but I’ll keep this in mind when I want something entertaining that I don’t have to think about.
