The Rover Review
RYAN: This is the the new indie Aussie movie starring Guy Paerce and Edward Cullen.
CHUCK: (laughs)
RYAN: Aka Robert Pattinson. It has the same disturbing nature as No Country for Old Men and is a bit of a slow burn, taking the whole length of the movie to really understand what’s happening. But I enjoyed following it and sitting there being shocked.
CHUCK: Yeah you hit me in the arm a couple times out of shock at certain moments. You’re right. It’s definitely a slow movie and I found that pace to be much more effective in the first third of the movie and then it just started to drag on for me and I stopped caring at some point. Guy basically had the same line for the first half of the movie, “Where’s my car?”
RYAN: Well that’s the thing. It is very deliberately paced. I was beginning to worry throughout that it wasn’t going to make any sense but I was satisfied by the end that all loose ends were tied up. I wasn’t left frustrated. It’s not pointless but it is aggravating at points but the violence.
CHUCK: I wasn’t necessarily upset by the violence but it just always came out of nowhere and I think that’s why it shocked you so much.
RYAN: That’s true.
CHUCK: It’s takes place in a pseudo-future society. It did remind me a bit of some old, quiet, desolate Westerns – life without rules. Guy is always fantastic.
RYAN: Yeah and it’s fun to hear him talk in his native Aussie dialect. He’s so good and he’s so skinny.
CHUCK: His calves almost took on a role of their own in this movie.
RYAN: Oh my God, seriously.
CHUCK: Apparently he had time to workout but not get a haircut.
RYAN: Oh, filthy. I wanted to open up a salon in this movie and just shampoo the heck out of everyone. People were eating but no one was showering. Is there no running water in this collapsed future?
CHUCK: (laughs) It was dirty.
RYAN: This is one of Rob Pattinson’s best, maybe is his best performance. Totally unlike anything he’s ever done. Even when he had no lines, his face said so much about his character. He was truly transformed. He’s impressive in this film.
CHUCK: I only know him from Harry Potter.
RYAN: Cedric Diggory, such a small role. Water for Elephants?
CHUCK: Oh I did see that. He was good in that. He did remind me a bit of the character of Lennie in Of Mice and Men and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.
RYAN: I liked it. It’s drama.
CHUCK: It’s quiet and I became pretty bored. I didn’t like the ending as much as you did.
RYAN: I really did like it. I think it will divide audiences and some will like it, others won’t. There isn’t much dialogue but the story is still a thriller and the music is mostly cool. It’s not one to run out and see but it’s a cool indie thriller.
