THE PRESTIGE

RYAN: We just saw the most prestigious movie ever.

CAROLINE: It might win Best Prestige of the Year.

RYAN: It’s “The Prestige.”

CAROLINE: I really liked this movie and it stars two of the hottest men in Hollywood.

RYAN: Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale. And I ping-ponged between them the whole movie.

CAROLINE: I think my vote is with Hugh.

RYAN: Yes he was hotter… in this movie.

CAROLINE: And for the gentlemen, there’s a little Scarlett Johansson in corset action.

RYAN: For the straight gentlemen, that is. And she did pretty well with her English accent.

CAROLINE: She was decent in this. We haven’t loved her in some of her previous work, a la “Match Point” and “Scoop.”

RYAN: Right.

CAROLINE: But this, she was good in.

RYAN: She was. And Hugh Jackman’s American accent was rather good.

CAROLINE: Oh, I totally disagree. I thought it was painful. I could totally hear his English coming out.

RYAN: You mean his Australian?

CAROLINE: That too. (laughs) But I thought he was great. I really liked the movie. It’s getting good to lukewarm reviews. Some are calling it “fluffy.” But I thought it was very well made and entertaining.

RYAN: I agree. It’s directed by Chris Nolan, who also directed “Batman Begins” and “Memento.” And I think this is my fave of his films because it had magic and great effects and that sort of mystical-themed blockbuster attribute.

CAROLINE: It’s got fun elements of romance and intrigue as well.

RYAN: The story’s wonderful – the competition and revenge; very dramatic. And it has a terrific appearance by David Bowie.

CAROLINE: I know. The audience gasped a little when he appeared. I think they didn’t expect to see him. But I, of course, did.

RYAN: Well, he was in the trailer. But I guess not everyone sees every trailer as we do. Bottom line?

CAROLINE: I definitely recommend this movie. The acting was great. It looked really good. And it’s twisty and fun.

RYAN: I was definitely kept on my toes. It’s one of the best films out right now. It’s beautifully shot, edited, directed, performed, and all the elements line up. Although it’s somewhat long, it moves really, really well; never feels too long.

CAROLINE: For a change, I didn’t think it was too long and that’s a pleasure. This is among the top five films we’ve seen this year.

RYAN: Agreed. “The Prestige!”
