The One I Love Review

The One I LoveRYAN: I had heard about this film recently and was intrigued by the sound of it because it seemed like the plot details are heavily guarded.  Like, after the set up, it’s as though you can’t really hear anything else about it so I had to check it out.  Plus it’s filed under the rom com category and we always love that.

CAROLINE: Yes we do.  This one stars Mark Duplass Elizabeth Moss.

RYAN: I like them both.  She’s on TV’s Mad Men, which I don’t watch, but I also remember from from Girl, Interrupted.  And he’s been in a bunch of things, most recently as Melissa McCarthy’s love interest in Tammy.

CAROLINE: How’s their chemistry?

RYAN: Very good – The dialogue between them is so natural and like a real conversation that it feels so unscripted almost – like as if they just improvised the whole thing.  And maybe they did a bit but there was a script.  They play a married couple on the rocks and seeing a therapist played by Ted Danson.

CAROLINE: Welcome back to the big screen, Mr. Danson!

RYAN: He’s not in it much but he’s fine.  This does turn out to be one of those movies that the less you know about it going in, the better.  But that being said there are some things to discuss.  It all starts out a bit slowly; not boring, but just kind of doesn’t take off immediately and then it has a real build to it all the way through to the end.

CAROLINE: That’s better than starting out with a bang and fizzling.

RYAN: Totally.  And so as the couple it trying to reconnect with each other and reignite their passion, they’re sent off for a weekend away in the country and then all I had heard was that something mystical or mysterious happened.  Of course after seeing the movie, I know get it but that was the hook that originally drew me to wanting to see it.

CAROLINE: That does sound intriguing.  Does it get all sci fi or something?  I don’t know if I’d like that.

RYAN: It’s not really sci fi territory.  It’s more like The Twilight Zone.

CAROLINE: Oh – is it a thriller?

RYAN: No but it has some thriller elements to it.  It’s super different and original and you know how great an achievement that is for a rom com to not be predictable.  I wouldn’t necessarily classify this as a rom com, but technically it is.

CAROLINE: I wish you could just tell me what happens.

RYAN: I liked how cleverly the plot unfolds.  I feel like I was exactly synced up to the script as the writer intended.  As the movie goes along, I would think about, “What ifs” in my head and then just at that moment, the characters would have the same instinct.  So I love how bold this movie is – it really crosses lines and gives you all the answers you are thinking of when this movie really starts cooking.  When you think about it, it’s a pretty complex context for a story but it really explains things in a very entertaining way.

CAROLINE: I know, no spoilers… but you really have me intrigued now as well.

RYAN: I just really love how different this movie is – and in a smart way.  It surprised me and will surprise you too.
