THE MUPPETS

RYAN: Ok. It may not be of the classical variety but The Muppets qualifies for this year’s musical. It certainly wasn’t Footloose.

CAROLINE: I couldn’t bring myself to see it. How did it compare to previous Muppet movies? I assume you’ve seen them all.

RYAN: I have indeed and this one definitely reignites the old Muppet flame. It’s as magical and exciting as The Muppet Movie.

CAROLINE: Break it down for me.

RYAN: Well it works with the typical “let’s put on a show” theme from The Muppet Show, or the golden age of Hollywood musicals. And the plot cleverly weaves nostalgia for those of us who fondly remember the Muppets, with a story to introduce their unique personalities to the newbie generation.

CAROLINE: That sounds like a good move. And star Jason Segel wrote it.

RYAN: He apparently has some kind of puppet fetish.

CAROLINE: I wouldn’t be surprised. How’s Amy Adams? Does she do some of the singing?

RYAN: Yes! And I love it. She gets her Enchanted back on in this movie. And one of my favorite moments was a song of hers. The music is all pretty simple. My brother – who saw this movie twice in one day, mind you – compared the music in this to TV’s Flight of the Conchords.

CAROLINE: I love that show.

RYAN: And it’s just such a fun, cool and funny movie. I truly LOL’d and actually teared up with laughter once.

CAROLINE: That’s never a bad thing… unless you’re in church.

RYAN: The only thing I can really criticize is Jason Segel’s singing. In particular, he had one ballad that really slowed the film down but other than that, it’s really a perfect movie for the whole family and for all ages.

CAROLINE: I’m still not gonna run out to see it.

RYAN: You don’t like this genre, so I don’t expect you to; but honey, we didn’t get any other musical in 2011. And the musical numbers are really a highlight in this movie. I was just thrilled with it.

CAROLINE: I’m happy for you.

RYAN: It’s so great to see them back on the big screen. I wouldn’t mind a revival of the TV Muppet Show either, truth be told. The cameos were brilliant and I hope this spawns a sequel… or several.
