The Maze Runner Review

Maze RunnerRYAN: It’s another adaptation from a popular YA book series.  It wasn’t really on my radar and I haven’t read this one but after seeing this movie, I really want to read them all. I’m kinda obsessed with this movie. It was so good!

CAROLINE: Really?  I know you’re a fan of Harry Potter and The Hunger Games and the like so I guess I’m not altogether surprised.

RYAN:The Maze Runner is sort of a cross between Lord of the Flies and The Hunger Games.  Having not read the book, I was appropriately confused at the start, but that actually works to your advantage in the audience because that’s exactly what the main character is experiencing.  And all the answers are revealed appropriately.

CAROLINE: That’s cool.  Is it really a movie for the tween set?

RYAN: It’s a real PG-13.  It’s suspenseful and not-bloddy but I actually found it more scary than the majority of real genre-scary movies.  The intensity is that great.  I actually spoke under my breath a couple times… which is super unacceptable.

CAROLINE: I would probably have been digging my nails into your arm.  But it sounds really fun.

RYAN: It’s a terrific thriller and I live the sci fi setup.  There’s a group of boys living on their own in the middle of a big maze who have basically established their own civilization.  They have their own vocabulary and everything; a new kid is added to the group, via an elevator every month, without any memory of life beforehand.

CAROLINE: Interesting premise.  And then of course, you have the titular maze.

RYAN: Yeah and that where the real thrills come in. It’s full of surprises and this movie is anything but predictable.  I was almost drooling with anticipation, I was so into it at times.  There’s, like, some Indiana Jones type of action at times.

CAROLINE: I love it.  How are the actors?

RYAN: The kids are all really good.  That’s part of what makes it work – the casting.  And the story and the effects are all cool.

CAROLINE: I’m glad you liked this one.

RYAN: It’s better than all of the Twilight movies.  There’s no love story subplot so that’s one area where it differs from all the Divergents and other recent YA adaptations.  But as far as adventure goes, this one is thrilling.

This wasn’t on my radar either. I thought it might be a sad and vapid version of Hunger Games. But if you recomend it, I’ll go see it!
