THE LOSERS
RYAN: Fresh off the heels of a great comic book adaptation from last week, Kick-Ass, we now have The Losers, which co-stars Zoë Saldaña of Avatar fame.
CAROLINE: It also stars one of our favorite hotties, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, a.k.a Denny from Grey’s, plus Idris Elba from The Wire and The Office, and Chris Evans who’s just got tapped to play Captain America.
RYAN: I’m surprised that I liked this movie because I wasn’t that jazzed about seeing it. It starts out pretty lame and cheesy, and the cheese stays throughout courtesy of Jason Patric as the villain. I like him, but he’s so ridiculously over-the-top in this movie. Every time he was on, he took me out of the moment.
CAROLINE: I was unable to attend this screening with you, but I can’t say I’m too torn up about it. I’m riding high from the awesomeness that was Kick-Ass and I don’t need another comic book movie right now.
RYAN: Well, Kick-Ass is definitely the better movie, but I liked The Losers almost as much. Zoë Saldaña and Jeffrey Dean Morgan have great chemistry, and once she’s introduced in the film – doing her best Rosario Dawson by the way – the movie gets much better. I couldn’t believe how much it improved after the lame beginning.
CAROLINE: Is it really violent?
RYAN: It’s not too bloody, and the action and fight sequences are cool. Some of the characterizations are cheesy, but it’s the story that really kept me entertained.
CAROLINE: Does the story move well?
RYAN: It does, and it’s blessedly about 97 minutes long. That’s a perfect length for any movie that isn’t Harry Potter.
CAROLINE: I just feel like this cast is such a hodgepodge of random, semi-famous actors, but no one you’re really that psyched to see. Obviously, we recognize a lot of them from TV and other movies, but it’s hardly an A-list group. Did they work well together?
RYAN: They were great as a team. It’s kind of like Kick-Ass, or even Tropic Thunder, where there characters are a rag-tag group working as a team. I felt the camaraderie. And when the movie ended, I found myself hoping for a sequel so we could find out where the story goes.
CAROLINE: Is Denny as hot as I remember?
RYAN: He’s a little thick, honestly, but I still appreciate him. He’s got that dark, swarthy look you like. I’ll take him in a movie any day.
— BOTTOM LINE —
RYAN: You should go into this movie with low expectations. It starts off really poorly and is consistently cheesy, but it gets a lot better as it goes along and I really loved the story. But if you haven’t yet seen Kick-Ass, that’s the one to see of this genre.
