THE LAKE HOUSE
RYAN: It’s a gorgeous day in New York City but I have no regrets that we spent it in a movie theater.
CAROLINE: Well, it wasn’t that gorgeous when we went in – it was hazy, hot and humid. And cloudy.
RYAN: But now it’s sunny and gorgeous.
CAROLINE: But I don’t care because we just saw the best movie ever.
RYAN: The best movie EVER! It should be, like, the sequel to “The Notebook.”
CAROLINE: Sigh. I mean, heart-wrenching. Cry-worthy. Phenomenal.
RYAN: This was the first time ever in our movie-going career that we cried together.
CAROLINE: I don’t know if that’s true.
RYAN: It’s true. Because I cry at movies so infrequently that I can remember every time.
CAROLINE: Whereas I cry like a baby all the time.
RYAN: Right, so I’m just saying that I enjoyed crying with you.
CAROLINE: Wow, this movie.
RYAN: Yes, “The Lake House.”
CAROLINE: The reunion of Sandy Bullock and our good friend, Keanu.
RYAN: There was such outstanding emotional tension in this movie. It was wonderful.
CAROLINE: If you’ve seen the trailer, you know this is about two people corresponding in different years, and some people are questioning the plausibility of that, and I just say, “Shut up and suspend your disbelief.”
RYAN: The bottom line is, it’s such a brilliant story. It’s a science fiction love story. Kind of.
CAROLINE: Kind of. It’s got some “Back to the Future”-esque time elements.
RYAN: It’s a story that is told so expertly, that if you’ve got any heart, you’re gonna love it.
CAROLINE: It’s a big-time weeper.
RYAN: Sandra Bullock, who has your exact hair but brunette, did an outstanding job and she’s never looked better.
CAROLINE: She looks great. She had really good make-up. And Keanu – I know his acting skills have been questioned by some but I thought he was good. He still delivers his lines in a somewhat surfer dude way sometimes but I was into it. He looks great, he’s aging well.
RYAN: I don’t know if he’s aging well. He looks bloated. And he’s still as cardboard as ever but I didn’t care. I fell hook, line and sinker for the movie, but I still think he can’t act.
CAROLINE: Ever since seeing him in the Diane Keaton movie, “Something’s Gotta Give,” I’ve turned over a leaf with him, especially when it comes to romantic roles. I like it, I’m in. Thank you, Keanu.
RYAN: And the ever-present Christopher Plummer, Edelweiss, turns up in “The Lake House.”
CAROLINE: My God, he’s been in every movie playing someone’s dad since 2004!
RYAN: He’s had a renaissance unlike any other actor for his age.
CAROLINE: And I say bravo.
RYAN: The set design was great in this. The lake house itself –
CAROLINE: The eponymous lake house.
RYAN: – was gorgeous.
CAROLINE: Very nice, except can see your bidness all the time, ‘cos no curtains.
RYAN: As long as you don’t have any Peeping Toms, you’re ok. The only thing I thought was kind of awkward, about a quarter through the film, and they only used it once, was this kind of random Stars Wars transitions with the sweeps and the wipes. It was very 70s. I guess the filmmakers decided to try something creative and they decided they didn’t like it so they don’t use it in the rest of the film.
CAROLINE: Whatever, the story is so fabulous. It’s a true love story. And by the by, there’s no romantic comedy about it, this a romantic drama.
RYAN: We both are people who tend to figure things out ahead of time, but this movie really kept us on our toes.
CAROLINE: Well I figured out one thing early on but I won’t reveal it here.
RYAN: We loved the ending. Final thought?
CAROLINE: If you are a gal like myself, you will absolutely adore this film. Is it a date movie? I don’t know.
RYAN: I think so.
CAROLINE: Some guys might think it’s cheesy. It’s certainly not fast-moving. But it’s such a lovely story and it’s great, and it so did not disappoint. I’d say it even exceeded my expectations.
RYAN: It’s not way too long, but it is too long.
CAROLINE: I didn’t care, I could have sat there for eight hours.
RYAN: But I loved it. It was such a great story, and my heart is still with it. It really made me feel so much love, and I felt what they were feeling. It’s a movie that makes you…
CAROLINE: Yearn for love?
RYAN: Yeah. It’s great, it’s just overall brilliant, and you should really see this if you like love stories.
