THE INVASION
RYAN: “The Invasion” might have been more appropriately titled “Scientology.”
CAROLINE: Yes, the full title is “Scientology: The Nicole Kidman Story – How She Nearly Got Sucked In But Broke Out.” But seriously, “The Invasion” is a sci-fi thriller remake of “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig.
RYAN: It’s the first of two movies they’re starring in together this year and now we know why; they have amazing chemistry.
CAROLINE: I went into this movie with every expectation that it would kind of suck. And while it’s not a phenomenal film by any means, it’s fun. It’s a late summer thriller, and I enjoyed myself. And people, Daniel Craig is worth every penny of your ticket price. He’s James Bond, for God’s sake!
RYAN: His eyes are unbelievable. Everyone in this movie has gorgeous light blue eyes; there are no brown-eyed people except for Jeffrey Wright. And Nicole Kidman is so easy to look at. I love her so much as an actress.
CAROLINE: Yeah, but her accent was questionable at times. Early on in the movie, our friend Sean John turned to me and said, “Is she supposed to be Southern in this movie?” Like seriously, we couldn’t tell. But then as the film went along, her accent got better and more standard American. I liked her sensible bob too. She’s looking good, even though her face is frozen.
RYAN: There’s also an appearance in this movie by a woman who was in the 1978 version of this film. This time she plays Nicole Kidman’s patient and it’s fun to see her the second time around.
CAROLINE: And there’s an adorable little boy who makes his feature film debut as Nicole Kidman’s son. I loved him; he was so good. He’s the next Dakota Fanning.
RYAN: Let’s all remember, when this movie was shooting it was riddled with problems. They had to shut down the shoot at one point because Nicole Kidman had a car accident during filming.
CAROLINE: That car chase scene was intense; it’s no wonder she got in an accident. And there were tons of reshoots done on this movie, which is always a bad sign. But in my opinion, they managed to make a decent 90-minute film that’s kind of fun.
RYAN: Totally. It’s a little bit gross, a little scary but definitely fun. It’s obviously very well acted because the cast is so great, and there are a lot of edge-of-your-seat moments. You’ll be entertained and you’ll definitely want to see this one on the big screen. Bottom line?
CAROLINE: I liked this movie more than I thought I would. It’s certainly not the best film of the summer, but it’s fun and creepy in a way that makes you want to grab the arm of your friend sitting next to you during the scary scenes. So I’m pleasantly surprised, even though I’m saddened that Nicole Kidman can’t move her face anymore. Which is appropriate for this film actually.
RYAN: Whatever, she looks great. This movie is more sci-fi than thriller, so even if you don’t like scary movies you can still stomach this one. It’s more exciting than scary. I recommend it for sure.
