THE HOUSE BUNNY
RYAN: I finally saw “The House Bunny” which I’ve been dying to see ‘cos it’s from the same writers as “Legally Blonde”, one of my favorite movies ever.
CAROLINE: And it also stars Anna Faris who we love. But unfortunately, I could not attend the screening with you. So tell me everything.
RYAN: It was unfortunate because I think we’d have enjoyed certain moments together. But overall, I neither loved nor hated this movie.
CAROLINE: The trailer was starting to wear a little thin in my opinion. Was Anna as good as Reese in “Legally Blonde”?
CAROLINE: Gasp! Really?
RYAN: She is impossibly fit and sexy and gorgeous, but her character is so over the top a caricature of a dumb blonde that she completely lacks depth throughout the film. Interestingly, or predictably, the plot closely resembles that of “Legally Blonde” but with different details.
CAROLINE: How disappointing.
RYAN: Specifically though, Anna’s character fails to show any growth the way Elle Woods did. And it overall lacks any major highs and lows in the plot.
CAROLINE: Are you quite finished with your rant?
RYAN: You say rant. I say review.
CAROLINE: What I’m second most curious about is the supporting cast. Namely, one Rumer Willis. I don’t need to ask about Emma Stone ‘cos I know she was great.
RYAN: She was cute. Rumer actually looks OK but her acting is very wooden. There was a scene where she runs and she looks so much like Demi, but she can’t really deliver a line.
CAROLINE: How was that Katharine McPhee?
RYAN: She’s so beautiful, it’s almost alarming and upstaging and so it was very hard to buy her as the dowdy sorority girl pre-makeover. She’s stunning and actually has a scene where she’s supposed to do karaoke badly but as we know for good singers, it’s very hard to sound bad.
CAROLINE: But can the girl act?
RYAN: She didn’t have enough lines for me to really be able to fairly judge.
CAROLINE: And my final question… how was Colin “Son of Tom” Hanks?
RYAN: He’s got the genes but this was really a role for Jason Biggs. His ‘straight-man’ to Anna’s comedic role was swallowed up on screen. He basically drowned in this movie.
CAROLINE: It sounds like my suspicions were a little bit right then.
RYAN: My expectations were so high ‘cos I wanted a new “Legally Blonde”, so I’m definitely let down. But at the same time, I enjoyed all the girliness and pinkness and blondeness.
CAROLINE: Of course you did. Bottom line?
RYAN: This movie suffers from the typical “all the best stuff happens in the trailer” business. It’s fun and at best, cute, but it lacks heart and intelligence. I do recommend it but seriously lower any expectations.
