THE GHOST WRITER
RYAN: I just fell in love a little bit at the movies, because The Ghost Writer stars Ewan McGregor.
CAROLINE: Honey, it’s no secret you’ve adored him for ages. This is a Roman Polanski movie which stars a veritable plethora of British and faux British actors like Tom Wilkinson, Pierce Brosnan, Olivia Williams and Kim Cattrall.
RYAN: I couldn’t figure out the deal with Kim Cattrall’s accent. Was she supposed to be an American with a little bit of a Madonna speech affect? Or a Brit who had spent too much time in the US and started to lose her accent?
CAROLINE: Or was she just phoning it in? I guess we’ll never know; but either way it wasn’t great.
RYAN: Fine, but I’m willing to hang up my Samantha shoes for a moment and give her a chance in another role.
CAROLINE: She was decent, though she didn’t have a whole lot to do. Olivia Williams was great.
RYAN: The cast is the strongest thing about the movie. We’ve got Timothy Hutton, who we don’t see much anymore, in a teeny role, along with cameos from Eli Wallach and Jim Belushi, who was doing his best Daddy Warbucks impression.
CAROLINE: Let’s be honest, this movie is pretty mediocre. It’s not remarkable.
RYAN: I think the audience might have enjoyed it more than we did though. They were laughing; though sometimes at inappropriate parts.
CAROLINE: I think some of that laughter was because the movie was cringe-worthy.
RYAN: Ewan’s role is written with a witty, acerbic tone, and he has some genuinely funny lines. But when some people applauded at the end, I was like, “Really?”
CAROLINE: Yeah. There’s nothing to love here.
RYAN: It might be partially because we just saw Shutter Island, which is truly a great film.
CAROLINE: I know it’s not fair to compare the two, but I kind of can’t help it since they’re both suspense thrillers. The Ghost Writer doesn’t even hold a candle to Shutter Island, even though it has a cool premise. Ewan McGregor plays a ghost writer who’s working on the former British Prime Minister’s memoirs.
RYAN: The set design was good. The house it takes place in is one of the coolest I’ve seen since Sleuth with Jude Law and Michael Caine. The mood and the atmosphere is good too, but it took way too long to put the pieces together. The movie didn’t really take off until the last forty minutes.
CAROLINE: It felt long to me. It definitely dragged and never fully engaged me. Usually I can get into a murder mystery, but this one is off.
— BOTTOM LINE —
RYAN: It’s slow moving and a little dull, but still smart and well made with good performances. It’s somewhat enjoyable, but you don’t have to rush out and see it in the theater. I’d call it a rental, especially if you like the cast and this director.
CAROLINE: I can’t really recommend this one. It doesn’t suck completely, but it doesn’t have anything really redeeming either. Good cast, but it didn’t deliver.
