THE DESCENT

RYAN: Caroline, I’d like to thank you very much. It was very ‘decent’ of you to see “The Descent,” a scary film.
CAROLINE: Normally, as our readers may know, I do not like to see scary movies. However, I did see this one and I can report that it is, indeed, scary as hell.
RYAN: Yes, it is! Much to my surprise.
CAROLINE: Well, hello – it’s a horror movie after all.
RYAN: But usually I don’t get so scared. With these kind of gory films, I’m usually like, “Oh, whatever, it’s so gross.” But it wasn’t just me, I’ll have you know – you were scared a-plenty.
CAROLINE: Oh honey, I screamed out loud. It’s so embarrassing. But I’ve learned to own my fear.
RYAN: I’ll let you own it. At least you didn’t sleep through this one at all.
CAROLINE: Wow. I can’t believe you’re calling me out like this.
RYAN: Yeah, like the half hour you slept during “Scoop,” a movie you actually loved.
CAROLINE: (gasps) I SO did not sleep during “Scoop!” No, it was “The Night Listener.”
RYAN: You absolutely slept through part of “Scoop.”
CAROLINE: Absolutely not!! No, no…it was “My Super Ex-Girlfriend.”
RYAN: Oh right, that’s it. But anyway, “The Descent” was really good. One of things I liked best about this film is that it has all unknown actresses. The first part of the movie, which is very plot-intensive, before it gets to all the gore, is really great
and you really begin to care about these people.
CAROLINE: As a young-ish woman, this definitely appealed to me since not many horror movies focus on a group of young women and their complicated relationships with each other. And it reminded me of me and my friends, minus the spelunking.
RYAN: And there’s no gratuitous sex like most formulaic horror films have.
CAROLINE: It’s a good movie, and if you were watching the first chunk of it, you might not even know it’s a horror movie. It’s about female friendships and ultimately, betrayal.
RYAN: And it was pretty bad-ass. There were moments where the girl who plays Juno looked very Angelie Jolie in “Tomb Raider.” It’s very empowering to women.
CAROLINE: I couldn’t agree more. But the movie is also terrifying. I was scared out of my pants. It’s very gory, I have to warn you – there are some “Carrie”-esque bloody moments that scared me to death. So if gore isn’t your bag, this isn’t a film for you.

RYAN: So what’s your bottom line here?
CAROLINE: This is a fun movie if you’re into horror flicks. It’s got a little more cache than the average slasher flick since it’s British. And the acting is very high quality.
RYAN: I agree. This movie is one that accomplishes its mission as a frightful tale. There could be a sequel.
CAROLINE: Ugh, I hope there isn’t. One way to ruin a great film is to have a dumb sequel.
RYAN: But people will eat this up.
