The Cabin in the Woods Review
RYAN: This is one crazy freak-fest of a movie!
CAROLINE: Well it’s supposed to be a scary movie. So it delivered?
RYAN: Well yes it delivered something alright. But since we don’t do spoilers as a rule, I don’t want to say too much about this move.
CAROLINE: How is it though? Did it scare you?
RYAN: In a way it is scary but it’s unrealistic-scary. There’s a bit of camp and comedy to it too. It’s actually a very contemporary story, written and produced by Joss Whedon.
CAROLINE: …the mastermind behind TV’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer, among others.
RYAN: And stars Chris Hemsworth, Bradley Whitford, Richard Jenkins, and Jesse Williams, the dude with the nice eyes on TV’s Grey’s Anatomy.
CAROLINE: And I assume from the trailer, some obligatory hot chicks.
RYAN: Yes. And there’s one other actor, Fran Kranz, who I swear is doing his best Shaggy from Scooby Doo impression in this movie.
CAROLINE: Please don’t swear.
RYAN: This movie is like a clever, more engaging Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It’s bloody, gory and creepy. And I jumped several times, even just at the title credit.
CAROLINE: Wow. I don’t think I’d enjoy this film.
RYAN: It’s way better than a gory SAW movie but it isn’t scary in the sense like it’s something that could actually happen. It’s more, like, just the editing and the sudden pop-outs that get you; and the grossness. There are some themes that are terrifying and nightmare-inducing, but afterward, you’re left more with a bit of a comedic aftertaste.
CAROLINE: Well you were anyway. But you like scary movies. I might have actually been terrified in this film.
RYAN: Horror is not for everyone. This certainly takes you on some uncharted waters while also incorporating some throwbacks to classic horror movies.
CAROLINE: It does sound intriguing. I wish you could be a bit more explicit.
RYAN: Me too! I want you to see it so we can talk about it. This is the good kind of movie to go with friends and then talk about afterward.
CAROLINE: I always find that enjoyable.
RYAN: What I think I can say is that this film says something about our society and sensationalism, almost the way The Hunger Games does.
CAROLINE: Again, your assessment is cryptic, yet interesting.
RYAN: There is more blood in this than the blood-flood in The Shining.
CAROLINE: Ick.
RYAN: Ultimately, it’s waymazing. There are some images that I definitely don’t want to think about while trying to sleep at night – but bang for the buck, this definitely has it!
