RYAN: I’d like to introduce my dear pal Kim Mayer to my roster of associate film critics.
KIM: I’m so glad to be here and making my debut with this major movie!
RYAN: It’s the culmination of years of superhero films and one of the most anticipated blockbusters of the year. After bits of Sam Jackson popping up here and there in other movies, we finally get The Avengers.
KIM: Woo hoo! So awesome! I love superheroes and superhero movies and even more than that, I love Joss Whedon, so I was in fangirl heaven for two hours and fifteen minutes tonight. It was awesome!
RYAN: I didn’t know if I wanted to watch the movie or just watch
you watch the movie.
KIM: [laughs’ I was so enthralled in parts, I bet you were like, “OMG is she still breathing?”
RYAN: It’s a little slow to start and felt a bit like short stories coming together at first, but they did need to bring all the heroes together and make this a stand alone story. And when they do come together, whoa.
KIM: I agree. You need to find a basis in general but for people who may have not seen Iron Man, Thor, Captain America… you need some kind of set up here. But the second it took off, there was no lookin’ back.
RYAN: I loved the
Iron Mans and liked
Captain America but not
Thor and the Hulk has never been popular in film before, so this could really have gone either way…
KIM: I loved the Hulk in this movie. Mark Ruffalo was incredible. And as for ScarJo, I’m not a huge fan but I totally loved her in this. She was so badass.
RYAN: She really does hold her own in the company of men. And I am happy to report that Gwyneth Paltrow is also there for her
Iron Manly duties too. But ScarJo was def impressive in every scene.
KIM: She stole her scenes.
RYAN: I liked the Mark as the Hulk too. Forget Eric Bana and Edward Norton… Mark’ll win audiences over as the green guy.
KIM: Even leaving the screening, we overheard people commenting how much they loved the Hulk in this movie.
RYAN: And RDJ is always one of my fave actors and I wonder how many of his lines were improved in this film. He’s so brilliant. Jon Favreau produced and all the right Iron Man touches are there.
KIM: RDJ is such a wonderful actor, it’s like he’s not even acting at all.
RYAN: Let’s talk about the effects.
KIM: The special effects were really amazing but the 3D, not so much.
RYAN: The 3D was awful! You only notice it for, like, five minutes at the beginning of the film and then it’s not there. It’s a terrible case for 3D. But the effects were many and phenom.
KIM: Some of the best effects I’ve seen and just action, action, action.
RYAN: The whole second half of the film is a climax, it’s like, one of the longest climaxes in a film ever and it doesn’t wane or get boring. And the way the characters are woven together, it’s equal without trying too hard.
KIM: I was literally sitting at the edge of my seat.
RYAN: And I liked the bad guy, Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston; it has to be hard being the one non-famous person in the cast. He was in
Thor and
War Horse before this though.
KIM: He was really good, like you love to hate him in this, like all classic bad guys.
RYAN: As is tradition for these films, you have to stay through the credits for the hint at a sequel, which I’m already looking forward to. I could have sat there for two more hours of story.
KIM: Oh you know I could have, honey. Joss is so fabulous at using really well placed humor at tense moments, lightening it up for a split second. I love how he does that and then gets right back into the action again.
RYAN: We’re sufficiently raving. Just see it in 2D if you have the choice.
