SUPERBAD
RYAN: This review could technically begin and end like this: “Superbad” is super good.
CAROLINE: [laughs’ It’s a really funny movie, surprisingly enough. We were skeptical going in; but it’s produced by Judd Apatow whom we adore, as we’ve stated many times previously on this site, so how could it have been bad?
RYAN: Judd Apatow is, of course, the very talented director of “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” and “Knocked Up.”
CAROLINE: “Superbad” stars Jonah Hill, who is featured in both “Knocked Up” and “Evan Almighty” this summer.
RYAN: And he’s so fat that he makes Nikki Blonsky from “Hairspray” look skinny.
CAROLINE: Whatever, they’re both enormous. But Jonah is so vulgar and crass in “Superbad”; it’s a true R-rated comedy in the vein of “Porky’s” and “Fast Times at Ridgemont High.”
RYAN: It must have been so much fun to play his role and to get the script and be like, “I can’t believe I get to curse like this and get paid.”
CAROLINE: His sidekick is played by Michael Cera from “Arrested Development.”
RYAN: He is so funny. He sort of plays the voice of morality opposite Jonah’s crazy character.
CAROLINE: He does an awesome job playing the straight man. His deadpan humor is great, and it complements Jonah’s bluster really well.
RYAN: There are also two girls in this film who play the love interests who are also great. I’d never seen either of them before, but they potentially have huge careers ahead of them because of this movie.
CAROLINE: They’re both cute, but not too cute; they have just enough flaws. But to a high school dweeb, they would be the hottest chicks ever. And let’s not forget the guys’ partner-in-crime Fogell aka McLovin, played by newcomer Christopher Mintz-Plasse, who is quite possibly the biggest nerd I’ve ever seen onscreen.
RYAN: He’s geek-tastic.
CAROLINE: Then there are two bumbling cops played by Seth Rogen, who co-wrote the film and also starred in “Knocked Up,” and Bill Hader, whom I’ve adored on SNL for the past two years.
RYAN: While watching the move, the one thing that I thought the most was how unpredictable it was. With most comedies you can sort of tell what’s coming next; but with this movie, at every turn, I was like, “Wow, I did not see that coming.”
CAROLINE: At the end of the day, it’s a love story between two people. But I’ll let it be a surprise as to who those two people are. Bottom line?
RYAN: I am surprised at how much I enjoyed this movie. I really think it’s one of the best comedies in years. The performances and the writing are great. The one criticism that I have is that it’s about twenty minutes too long. But it’s still hilarious. If you can handle all the profanity, you’ll love this movie.
CAROLINE: I concur on the too long part; it’s hilarious at the beginning and at the end, but the middle dragged a little. They could have cut out some of the cop scenes. But it has some awesome, really genuine moments of teen angst, some of which are so painful that I actually had to cover my eyes. It brings you right back to your own teen awkward stage. So we definitely recommend this movie.
RYAN: Like I said, it’s super good.
