SUNSHINE
CAROLINE: By all accounts, “Sunshine” is a movie that I should not have liked because it’s science fiction and I normally don’t go for that. But I really liked this movie.
RYAN: I should have liked this movie, but I haven’t had a chance to see it yet.
CAROLINE: It’s directed by Danny Boyle, who has certainly done the sci-fi thing before.
RYAN: And it has the bad guy from “Red Eye” in it.
CAROLINE: Cillian Murphy – we love him, and he’s amazing in “Sunshine.” It’s an ensemble film, but he’s kind of the star. It’s also got Michelle Yeoh and hottie Chris Evans.
RYAN: Was it an interesting story?
CAROLINE: Totally – it’s about a group of scientists who are on a space mission to save the sun, which is dying. It takes place in the not-too-distant future, so it definitely has that scary apocalypse feeling.
RYAN: How are the special effects?
CAROLINE: It’s not so much a special effects movie; it’s more of a thought-provoking thriller and a morality tale. But the visuals are great; lots of big, beautiful shots of the sun that make you squint in the theater. You actually want to turn your eyes away because you know, my mom taught me that you’re not supposed to look directly at the sun.
RYAN: [laughs’ Indeed.
CAROLINE: And then about an hour into the movie, there’s a fun twist that I did not expect at all. It’s a little gross actually. The movie takes a horror turn for a minute.
RYAN: So do you think I would like this movie? Is it scary?
CAROLINE: I do think you’d like it, and it’s definitely creepy. It even gets a little bloody at times, though not in a gore-fest way thankfully. The movie is very science-y; everyone in the crew is either a physicist or a chemist or something. And they have a lot of human drama and ethical decisions to make whilst in space.
RYAN: Bottom line?
CAROLINE: It’s an interesting film with an excellent cast. I don’t know that it’s going to do huge box office, but I would recommend it. And I didn’t expect to like it, so that was a pleasant surprise.
RYAN: I know what I’m getting you for Christmas – “Sunshine” on DVD.
CAROLINE: OK, now you’re taking it too far.
