Sisters Review

Sisters PosterRYAN: How bold of any film to open opposite the new Star Wars? But if anyone can do it, it’s dream team gal pals, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. They bring some worthy movie magic of their own with Sisters.

CAROLINE: As you know, I have little to no interest in Star Wars, so Sisters is my Star Wars this weekend. And it so did not disappoint. I think I am officially in love with Tina Fey.

RYAN: I loved how funny this is. Most comedies only make me LOL on the inside; but this one actually made me laugh out loud for real. Amy and Tina’s chemistry has never been better. You can tell how much they love each other. And everyone around them is super funny too.

CAROLINE: I adore Ike Barinholtz from The Mindy Project and he’s looking cuter than ever in this movie as Amy’s love interest.

RYAN: I loved that whole subplot for Amy. I found her feelings as 40-something singleton to ring very true.

CAROLINE: I think what I loved most was seeing Tina play against type. She’s the black sheep sister who can’t hold down a job and is a bit of a mess, and she played it hilariously. Especially knowing how amazing and accomplished she is in real life. I loved her slutty outfits and over-the-top hair and makeup. She looks awesome in this movie.

RYAN: Let me just list some of the supporting characters, who were all hilarious: James Brolin and Dianne Wiest as the parents; Maya Rudolph; Rachel Dratch, who’s basically playing Debbie Downer; Kate McKinnon and even Heather Matarazzo of Welcome to the Dollhouse and Princess Diaries fame.

CAROLINE: Maya is always hilarious and a welcome addition to any cast. And coming off of Trainwreck, John Cena has another hilarious turn here. There wasn’t a weak link anywhere.

RYAN: Maya Rudolph also played against type in this as the mean girl.

CAROLINE: I love that they were able to sustain a 2-hour movie with the premise of throwing a party; the planning of it and then the actual event. I kept thinking, “How are they going to keep making this party funny?” but they did for the entire movie. And as someone who’s in the same age bracket as Amy and Tina, I found all the humor especially relatable and hilarious.

RYAN: This movie has the obligatory raunchy jokes of any R-rated comedy these days, but for some reason I didn’t mind them with these two actresses as much as I would with someone like Adam Sandler.

CAROLINE: OMG I couldn’t agree more. The best part was that it’s rated R, and therefore we got to hear Tina Fey drop F-bombs all over the place. And yes, since it’s a female-driven comedy, we didn’t have to deal with all the poop and fart jokes. Hear that, Adam Sandler?

RYAN: He basically make movies for 5-year-old boys at this point.

CAROLINE: All in all, I liked this movie even more than I thought I would. The trailer was only so-so, and I was concerned that it might not be as funny as it should be. But I had nothing to fear. It delivered on so many levels and I laughed out loud more times than I can count. Amy and Tina are a gift that keeps on giving.

RYAN: A great movie is welcome any time, even on the same day as the record-breaking Star Wars.
