Sin City: A Dame to Kill For Review

Sin CIty 2RYAN: This is the sequel to 2005’s Sin City  and it’s really more of the same.  I can’t say whether it’s much improved, visually, since I don’t really member many details from it, aside from the unique visuals.  And that style is the same.  This one is offered in 3D and it’s black and white with pops of color – mostly in red blood but there are other touches and it adds a very surreal, hyper-stylized quality to the film.

CAROLINE: This so does not appeal to me.  It looks like it’s just a total boy movie.

RYAN: That it is.  100%.  Women are total objets and the men all duke it out.  It’s like a soap opera for dudes.  But I really enjoyed the whole visual spectacle of it and it’s very easy to watch; aside from one super grotesque moment.

CAROLINE: Ew.  Don’t say more.

RYAN: No spoilers.  It is very R rated – super violent and gory but the blood is sometimes all white instead of read – and there’s sometimes a mix between sex and violence which contributes to the very misogynistic vibe too.

CAROLINE: How’s the cast?

RYAN: It’s killer, pun intended.  You have Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, Bruce WIllis, a cameo from Lady Gaga, and the two best parts – Josh Brolin and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.  Oh, there’s also Ray Liotta and one of my fave actresses Eva Green in a great role.  They’re all really good – except I was middy annoyed by the guys who all whisper the whole time and it’s often narrated, as part of the style.  It’s such an extreme film noir.

CAROLINE: It is a like the artistic equivalent of a graphic novel.

RYAN: Right – it’s literally like that.  It’s a comic book come to life.  The story was fine but it’s really two different story lines that never intersected and that’s kinda random.  I kept waiting for it to all come together but it’s really two separate stories which, as far as I can tell, only share the element of location within Sin City.

CAROLINE: That’s peculiar.

RYAN: Jessica Alba looks great but I’ve ever really been a fan of her performances.  She has a great body but she can’t dance so taking her seriously as  an exotic dancer in this movie is a stretch.

CAROLINE: Yeah she’s never really impressed us, let’s be honest.

RYAN: It’s the ultimate expression of tough guys and femme fatales.  The style is so fantastic – it’s kind of brilliant, the sets, costumes, makeup and design of it all is cool to dive into for a couple hours.  It’s not the most brilliant film out there but for what it’s going for – a film noir, mystery, comic book version of Kill Bill, it fully succeeds.

I loved the first one. Although I seem to remember not finishing my popcorn. I look forward to seeing this one.
