SHE’S OUT OF MY LEAGUE
RYAN: I attended the screening for She’s Out of My League with great reluctance because it just looked so stupid.
CAROLINE: I went in with low expectations too, since it looked like a silly comedy whose premise we’ve seen many times before. That turned out to be true, but it did have some cute moments and it made me laugh a few times.
RYAN: Yeah, it turned out to be much better than I thought it would be. I laughed too, and I found the characters very relatable.
CAROLINE: It’s a watchable movie despite not having any famous people in it. It does have a few faces you’ll recognize though, like the lead guy, Jay Baruchel who was in Tropic Thunder and some Judd Apatow stuff, as well as Krysten Ritter, who’s on Breaking Bad and often plays the best friend in movies.
RYAN: I think I like her.
CAROLINE: This sort of reminded me of a Dane Cook movie. Funny, but not brilliantly so.
RYAN: Totally! It’s not the worst rom com we’ve seen, but it’s not a must-see either.
CAROLINE: I think you said it best when you leaned over to me about halfway through and said, “This movie is trying so hard to be There’s Something About Mary.” It had a few gratuitous gross out moments. But some of them worked, and the humor was decent at times. I never groaned or cringed, but I wasn’t loving every minute of it either.
RYAN: One scene totally riveted me – when the lead girl comes out to meet Jay Baruchel’s family for the first time. It was so realistic and well written. The whole movie could have just been that one scene and I would have been happy. And I wonder if we would have liked it more if it had had bigger names in it.
CAROLINE: Hmm, that’s an interesting point; because so often we say we only liked a movie because it had big stars in it. If this had famous actors who we love in it, it’s possible we would have liked it more.
RYAN: Or we might have said, “Why is Amanda Seyfried in this stupid little movie?”
CAROLINE: Ha, probably. It’s one of those random little romantic comedies that actors do early on in their careers to make a name for themselves. It’s not the kind of script that would attract big names. And there’s nothing wrong with that.
RYAN: The girl truly is out of his league, but by the end I could kind of see them together.
CAROLINE: His character is such a sweetheart that you can’t help but root for him. I just wish Jay Baruchel would eat a few cheeseburgers. He looks like a famine victim.
RYAN: His buddies were all pretty well cast and their personalities were well defined. They were nerdy cute and appropriately obnoxious.
— BOTTOM LINE —
CAROLINE: It’s a cute enough movie but by no means a must-see in the theater. It’s the kind of movie you’d expect to see at this time of year. I certainly wasn’t appalled by it as I’d feared I might be. It had some very sweet moments.
RYAN: If you’re looking for a rom com and you’ve already seen Valentine’s Day, you could do worse than this. We liked it better than we thought we would.
