SHERRYBABY
RYAN: Your butt’s numb and I’ve never been more cramped in my life.
CAROLINE: It’s not a comfortable theater at Lincoln Plaza Cinemas at 62nd and Broadway.
RYAN: No. It must be one of the most uncomfortable experiences anywhere in New York City.
CAROLINE: It’s a small screen too. But you know what? They play the artsy films that no one else plays.
RYAN: They certainly do and we saw one such artsy film tonight: “Sherrybaby.”
CAROLINE: Not to be confused by the Four Seasons’ hit song.
RYAN: Exactly. This is an original work starring Maggie Gyllenhaal as Sherry.
CAROLINE: And though you may think it’s hard to buy the daughter of Hollywood royalty playing a smacked out ex-con, I did totally buy it.
RYAN: I purchased it as well. This is her greatest role to date.
CAROLINE: And she’s certainly not afraid to show her boobs.
RYAN: Oh no. For the straight guys… and lesbifriends, you get an eyeful here.
CAROLINE: And her nipples were, like, at attention.
RYAN: I know, the entire length of the film.
CAROLINE: She either had an on-set nipple tweaker or she was wearing faux hard nips like the ones Samantha wore in “Sex and the City.”
RYAN: And she was braless the entire movie. So beware when she’s runnin’ round.
CAROLINE: They’re quite bouncy.
RYAN: I have to ask, how does her brother, Jake Gyllenhaal, when going to see this film, in support of his sister… how does he watch those scenes? There’s at least one graphic sex scene.
CAROLINE: I would imagine he closes his eyes for that part. This is a good movie. It’s definitely small and indie-ish in its vibe. But it’s quite good and depressing as hell.
RYAN: Very depressing but a good script. It’s well-cast and acted.
CAROLINE: The little girl who plays her daughter is very good – and adorable to boot.
RYAN: True. There were a couple leading moments, but for the most part, this movie is mostly unpredictable. It’s an insightful look at the tribulations of an addict. I would never, for a minute, want to be an addict.
CAROLINE: It’s raw. The movie shows it like it is. Not that I can speak from any kind of experience, but they did a really good job of not painting too pretty a picture. It shows how hard it is in the struggles of an addict.
RYAN: How do you think she looks in this?
CAROLINE: I liked her so much better as a brunette. She looked like a strung-out betch!
RYAN: So honest. Bottom line?
CAROLINE: You may not be able to see this in your city, but it’s something that’s been talked about as a tour de force performance by one Maggie G. That’s why I wanted to see it and I’m glad we did.
RYAN: It’s gritty and entertaining. Now here’s a tip: either wait till it’s on DVD and view it in the comfort of your own home, or find a better theater than the one we saw it in.
