SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD

RYAN: I had literally zero interest in seeing the new movie, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. We’re not the target audience, and I just can’t take Micheal Cera in a romantic lead. I’m sorry.

CAROLINE: Honey, no apologies necessary. He’s not a looker. I’m so over his emo boy, coming-of-age lovelorn characters. And the girls in this film are cute. Anna Kendrick, Alison Pill, right?

RYAN: Well, Anna plays his sister but yeah, the three gals in his life – all totally heartbroken over him mind you – are too adorable for him. I just don’t buy him in this kind of role.

CAROLINE: That is the ick-factor for sure.

RYAN: But he is geeky/nerdy, which is fine since this movie is really one big video game.

CAROLINE: I couldn’t be less intrigued. And it’s based on a comic book to boot.

RYAN: I know – but it actually turned out to be really good. Scott Pilgrim relates to the world through video games and we see this story though his eyes and the effects – sound and visual – are some of the coolest, most original things you’ll ever see.

CAROLINE: Sizneriously?

RYAN: I’m not even kidding. I really didn’t know what to expect with this movie, but the cool stuff starts off right away; even the Universal graphics at the beginning were tweaked for this movie, and it’s consistent from there. The filmmakers took some major creative risks with this film, and it could heave really been polarizing; but instead it’s sorta awesome.

CAROLINE: Wow. Who knew?

RYAN: And the supporting cast is brilliant. Chris Evans, Brandon Routh, Jason Schwartzman… but Kieran Culkin – OMG, he’s terrific in this. He plays the gay roommate and is high-lar. I would pay to see a spin off of his character.

CAROLINE: That’s quite unexpected of Macauley’s brother.

RYAN: Yeah, it was crazy in a good way.

CAROLINE: How were the ex-boyfriends? Is there enough time to cover all seven?

RYAN: Each actor has a moment. And Brandon Routh is pretty funny.

CAROLINE: He was so forgettable as Superman. How was Anna Kendrick though, fresh off Eclipse and her Oscar nom for Up in the Air last year?

RYAN: She’s great, as always.

CAROLINE: I just can’t get into the whole video game/comic book thing this movie is serving up. But I’m glad you liked it.

— BOTTOM LINE —

RYAN: This movie totally caught me off guard. It’s refreshing and original; unique. I kind of loved it. I was a little taken aback with how aggressive the effects were at the beginning but once it becomes consistent and thematic, it’s really a new movie experience. My kudos to whoever had the vision for it. I’m not saying it’s a must see because it’s not really for all ages, but if you fall into the teen or geeky squad, check it out on the big screen.
