REPO MEN
RYAN: I was very excited about seeing Repo Men because I like science fiction and Jude Law is hot.
CAROLINE: I was intrigued by the premise of this movie, but couldn’t attend the screening with you because I opted to go to the premiere of another movie opening this weekend, The Bounty Hunter. So how was it?
RYAN: It was OK, but nowhere close to what I expected.
CAROLINE: I’m sorry to hear you say that. I know you were really psyched for this movie.
RYAN: As matter of fact, I might need to reassess and say I don’t even think I can recommend this film. The more I consider it, the more I dislike it.
CAROLINE: That’s not a good sign. What was the problem? The concept – futuristic, sci/fi, organ transplant repossession – seemed to be so up your alley.
RYAN: In theory it is, and there were some decent moments. But it really jumps the shark later on. It’s at best only OK to begin with and then it turns and actually becomes a frustratingly bad movie.
CAROLINE: How’s Jude?
RYAN: He never looked better, and he’s great. I like him as an actor and a person. And then there’s Forest Whitaker. He’s OK too but this movie must have been made before he lost all the weight for Our Family Wedding.
CAROLINE: [laughs’ So he’s not lookin’ as good as Jude. In the trailer it looked like this could be pretty violent.
RYAN: OMG. I saw this with my pal Chris and we actually turned to each other a couple times out of discomfort at the gore. It’s one of the bloodiest, like, most shockingly violent movies in a while. There are some strategically disgusting stabbings going on. It’s gratuitous.
CAROLINE: Eek, I’m cringing. I don’t think I would have liked that element.
RYAN: I knew right away you would have hated this movie. There are basically two women in the movie who felt very miscast – sort of hot, but not really, and just very bland. But there is Liev Schreiber as their boss, and he’s not bad.
— BOTTOM LINE —
RYAN: I really just felt like I was watching a live action video game, with boss fights and that kind of thing, but without the satisfaction of playing along. At the point where the film actually jumps the shark, you end up feeling cheated. Plus it’s at least 25 minutes too long.
