Beyond being a lifelong Oz fan, I love Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return and am proud to be in the minority of critics who favorably reviewed the film. When it opened in theaters May 9, 2014, reviews were predominantly harsh; almost in every case because those critics either compared it to the MGM classic The Wizard of Oz (an unfair comparison to any movie); or because of the double standard in Hollywood for indie animated movies.  Indie live action films with lower-than-blockbuster production values are more often celebrated than independent animated filmmaking.  In the case of Legends of Oz, animation has been held to as high a standard as the big studio animated movies.

The negative reviews may have had an effect on the weak domestic box office; however, the film received an “A” CinemaScore – the highest grade – based on actual moviegoers polled nationwide opening night.  There’s no arguing that the audiences who do see it, love it.  Viewer ratings on both IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes are very high.

Legends of Oz is completely delightful family entertainment.  If you have the chance to see it, judge for yourself and enjoy!  To Oz!
