Playing for Keeps Review

RYAN: I was really annoyed by this movie coming out now.  It looks like such a cheesy, cliche film.  And LBH, Gerry Butler hasn’t been making very good movies lately.

CAROLINE: True.  Was it that bad?

RYAN: No.  It’s actually not so bad.  It’s not great; but it’s a typical, filler, rom com.

CAROLINE: Ah, the typical kind.

RYAN: Yeah, some of the characters were a bit one dimensional.  Especially Judy Greer, whom we normally love.  I was glad to see her in this but it’s actually her worst performance.  I was quite disappointed in her.

CAROLINE: I’m shocked.  She’s usually underrated.

RYAN: Gerry is good in this, uses his original accent and looks good.  He’s such a charmer.  Dennis Quaid was good but a bit of a dufus, which the role calls for but his performance was over the top.

CAROLINE: How are the women?

RYAN: Pretty good.  CZ Jones actually looks amazing.  You can certainly tell she’s had work done but it’s not BPS.

CAROLINE: That’s refreshing.

RYAN: Jessica Biel was good but you know, she’s just not a great actress.  If it had been someone like Rachel McAdams, this movie might have been much more compelling.

CAROLINE: What of The Uma?

RYAN: She’s good but, like Dennis, who plays her hubby, very over the top.  There’s just a lot of over-acting going on in the movie.  And that’s really not acceptable with actors who have s’much experience.

CAROLINE: Yeah that’s uncalled for.

RYAN: I was happy that there’s a nice balance between the relationships story lines and the soccer.

CAROLINE: Was it really formulaic and predictable?

RYAN: Yes and no.  You basically know what’s going to happen but the way it unfolds was more original that I’d expected so that was good.

CAROLINE: There haven’t really been any must-see rom coms in recent histroy.

RYAN: It’s not a brilliant film but I didn’t regret it.  There were some dissapointing groans and moans from the other critics viewing in the screening I attended but I wasn’t that disappointed in this.  It’s cute.  It’s not bad.  The biggest offense is the over-acting.  But when you’re in the mood for a rom com, this could be worth a rental.
