Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters Review
RYAN: This is the sequel to Percy Jackson & The Lightening Thief (2010), and I enjoyed the first movie and liked this one about as much.
GABY: I liked it too. It’s kind of similar to the first one but different at the same time.
RYAN: It is the same tone, spirit and sense of adventure. It’s very much Clash of the Titans meets Harry Potter. But there are some new characters and a new mission.
GABY: I especially liked how in the beginning of the movie, Percy was starting to doubt his abilities but that sets up the new adventure for him having to prove himself all over again.
RYAN: He does have a good story arc once again. For a sequel, it’s a challenge to have as much impact as the first one but Sea of Monsers does a good job at keeping the world fresh and exciting. Percy does become the hero again. Logan Lerman portrays him and between the Percy movies, he did Perks of Being a Wallflower – that made him “one to watch” and brings more cred to this franchise now. He’s good.
RYAN: There’s some good casting in the supporting characters. Stanley Tucci plays a camp director and Nathan Fillion plays Hermes; and in a role you’d never recognize, is Missi Pyle. It’s so cool how it spins Greek mythology in a modern way.
GABY: You think of Greek mythology as boring or confusing but in these movies, it’s more fun.
RYAN: I missed not having Medusa in this one. She was in the first one. But here we get the three blind witches with the seeing eye, which was great.
GABY: We learned about some Greek mythology at school and I remember the blind sisters so I felt connected to that.
RYAN: That’s cool. The 3D wasn’t very good. It’s barely noticeable and the effects are so strong on their own that 3D really doesn’t even serve the film. It doesn’t benefit from it at all.
GABY: Right it doesn’t add much.
RYAN: All the water and creatures and cyclops are cool. I like the friendships between the main characters – they’re a lot like Harry, Ron and Hermione. And the bad guy is very much like a Draco Malfoy-type.
GABY: And there is another character that goes from being kind of mean to learning from her mistakes. I liked her.
RYAN: It’s PG and gonna be enjoyed by a broad audience. I’m glad they made this and would like them to continue making them. If you like that whole Clash of the Titans vibe, these movies are terrific fun.
