P.S. I LOVE YOU
RYAN: P.S. I love this movie! I have now officially become an Hilary Swank fan. And thank you Warner Bros. for making the first movie since “The Phantom of the Opera” in which Gerard Butler sings.
CAROLINE: The film is “P.S. I Love You” starring two-time Academy Award winner Hilary Swank, and let’s just acknowledge right now that Gerry Butler, who was in “300” earlier this year, is one of your favorites.
RYAN: He’s my #2 right after Ewan McGregor. He can do no wrong in mine eyes.
CAROLINE: Incidentally, one of my top 5 men, Jeffrey Dean Morgan better known as Denny from “Grey’s Anatomy,” is also in this movie. And there’s also a great supporting cast in the form of Gina Gershon, Lisa Kudrow, Harry Connick Jr. and Kathy Bates, some of whom were miscast in my opinion.
RYAN: No way. This movie is perfectly shot, so well cast and the music is fantastic. And I loved Hilary’s outfits, which pay homage to the ‘30s and ‘40s.
CAROLINE: I’m not trying to be mean because I really like her as an actress, but Hilary Swank just isn’t pretty enough for this role. I don’t think she can pull off a romantic lead. I just didn’t buy it. I’d rather see her beating the crap out of someone or even being all scientist-like as in “The Reaping.” I’m sorry, but she’s never going to have the romantic drama or comedy ease that someone like Katherine Heigl has.
RYAN: Let’s be real though – she has a killer bod.
CAROLINE: I can’t dispute that.
RYAN: It’s just her face that’s a little Shrek-ish.
CAROLINE: Let’s just call it a Butterface.
RYAN: But I thought she had some stunning moments in this film, though I know you didn’t like her headbands.
CAROLINE: Oh my God! Why so many headbands on her in this movie? What is she – a 55-year old matron?
RYAN: I thought it was more “Alice in Wonderland.” But this film has one of the best moments in recent film history when Hilary sings that woeful Judy Garland song.
CAROLINE: The premise of this movie is that Hilary has lost her husband and he wrote her all these letters before he died that she receives after his death. It’s a weeper for sure.
RYAN: There’s so much great music in this movie though. It’s not a musical but Gerard Butler plays the guitar in it, and there are several karaoke scenes.
CAROLINE: I thought you might keel over and die seeing Gerard play the guitar. And Denny does a little strumming too, so I thought I might die myself.
RYAN: Gerard Butler also does a striptease in the beginning that’s so sexy I almost died. Apparently I almost died several times during this film. I recommend bringing oxygen to the theater.
CAROLINE: And don’t forget the tissues. I cried at least four times. But let’s get real – what’s going on with Gina Gershon’s face?
RYAN: She may have had some not so hot work done around the eyes.
CAROLINE: She still has those funky, pouty lips but something is awry with her cheeks or forehead… or maybe it’s the whole face. Either way, she and Lisa Kudrow are both way too old to be Hilary’s friends in this movie. Lisa is hilarious though, and her one-liner delivery is always impeccable.
RYAN: I liked how they made Harry Connick Jr. kind of awkward in this. He’s a heartthrob in his own right, but he has weird long bangs which make him look a little goofy but appropriate for the character. Bottom line?
CAROLINE: I liked this movie in the sense that it’s a romantic drama and I’m a chick who loves that sort of thing. But I wouldn’t have cast Hilary Swank in the lead; give me Rachel McAdams any day. I found some of the scenes a little awkward, but LBH, if you’re a girl or a gay, you should see this and enjoy a good cry.
RYAN: This is definitely one for my sisters; you know who you are, boys and girl. I loved this film and I think it’s another one I’m gonna have to own on DVD and watch over and over.
