OUR FAMILY WEDDING
RYAN: I had relatively low expectations going into Our Family Wedding.
CAROLINE: And how did it live up to those?
RYAN: Not well.
CAROLINE: [laughs’ That’s not good. Don’t you enjoy America Ferrera though?
RYAN: I do in TV’s Ugly Betty. And I want her to have a film career but this was not the right choice for her. For starters, she’s miscast. She plays the fiancée to an actor who’s so out of her league!
CAROLINE: Now you’re sounding like one of the other new releases from the weekend.
RYAN: It’s true though. She’s cute but her fiancé in the film was hot. That’s a problem for the movie. And the script. Don’t get me start.
CAROLINE: Honey, this is the time and the place to start. What was wrong with the script?
RYAN: It’s just so insulting. Cliché, stupid, ridiculous, etc. Basically the two dads, of the bride and groom, don’t like each other and they try to compete and one-up each other through out the movie but it’s just so over-the-top and lame.
CAROLINE: That’s tragic. You’d think Forest Whitaker would choose better projects too.
RYAN: I guess this was his chance to try to be Eddie Murphy or something but it really didn’t work.
CAROLINE: What about Regina King? She’s fun.
RYAN: She was kind of out of place too. I didn’t buy her Jada Pinkett ‘do, and I didn’t buy her chemistry with Forest either.
CAROLINE: Were any of the jokes good?
RYAN: Not really. Rotten physical comedy and there’s even some low-blows on race and stuff that didn’t work well.
CAROLINE: Sounds like this movie’s in trouble.
— BOTTOM LINE —
RYAN: I didn’t completely hate this movie but that’s about the best compliment I can pay it. I laughed a couple times at some cute situations but overall it’s really rather dumb. I think there might have been a way to improve it, with casting and some more clever jokes. Alas, it is what it is… below average.
