Oscar Nominees

RYAN: So finally, after much anticipation, the Oscar nominations are out!

CAROLINE: I’m rocking out about it, I’m so excited!

RYAN: And nerd that you are…

CAROLINE: I did, indeed, sit on my couch, pen at the ready, taking notes, on who was nominated for what, as I do every year. And I believe one of the first things to come out of young Mira Sorvino’s mouth was nominee, Best Supporting Actress, Amy Adams!!

RYAN: That is the only award I care about. I swear.

CAROLINE: I was thrilled.

RYAN: I am so happy for her. And she damn-well better win it.

CAROLINE: I don’t think she will.

RYAN: She just totally deserves it. She gets to work with a stylist and work the Academy Awards red carpet; get that most coveted gift bag…

CAROLINE: I know.

RYAN: And it’s some tough competition, she’s up against.

CAROLINE: Michelle Williams could definitely take it.

RYAN: Or Rachel Weisz, who’s been sweeping the awards in this category. But I have to tell you, the biggest surprise was in the Best Picture category: “Capote.” Are you kidding me?!?!?

CAROLINE: Yeah, I know. I actually had a sneaking, ESP feeling that it might get nominated.

RYAN: If you wanna award Phil-Sey Hoffman, that’s fine. It’s a fine performance film. But Best Picture? I don’t think so. And when there are films out there like “A History of Violence” and “A New World” “and “Memoirs of a Geisha.” Please. It’s a joke.

CAROLINE: I’m with you. But the world seems to think that “Capote” is a great film. But the fact that “Walk the Line” did not get nominated… shocking.

RYAN: Yes. A much better, bigger movie than “Capote.” Even “Match Point” feels more Best Picture to me than “Capote.”

CAROLINE: B-T-W, let’s talk about the shock of one Terrence Howard ousting Russell Crowe for the Best Actor nomination.

RYAN: He should have never thrown that phone. It was his undoing, I tell you. And must we see “Hustle & Flow” now?

CAROLINE: I don’t really have any interest, but damn… Terrence was really good in “Crash” too. Oh! Let me add that I am thrrrilled to pieces that “Crash” is in the Best Picture category.

RYAN: Oh, so good. And sorry, “Brokeback Mountain,’ but if “Crash” can take Best Picture, I’ll gladly applaud. Historically, I should like to look back and see “Crash” as this year’s winner. I mean, I’m happy “Brokeback” has made the impression and the mainstream statement that it has… but overall… “Crash” is the better of the two films.

CAROLINE: Because my other two favorites of the year were not nominated, I will allow “Crash” to win. I’d like to also comment on the Maria Bello shut out, cuz she was oft mentioned and I think she got screwed by people not knowing whether to put her in the Lead Actress or Supporting Actress categories. I think she should have been lead actress but…

RYAN: And kudos to “Munich” and Stevie Spielberg-schwartz-man.

CAROLINE: (laughs) Except why was Eric Bana not nominated? It’s a travesty.

RYAN: I couldn’t tell you. I’ve searched high and low for the answer, but it escapes moi. Also strange… only three songs nominated… which is rare.

CAROLINE: And that means we’ll have fewer performances at the show, thank God.

RYAN: Maybe they did it for time… so the awards don’t run late. And there are only three movies nominated in the Visual Effects category, which is a shonda (Yiddish for shame)… because “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” should have been there.

CAROLINE: That was surprising to me. Although I was thrilled to see that my “New World” was nominated for Cinematography.

RYAN: And likewise, my “Howl’s Moving Castle” is up for Best Animated.

CAROLINE: Yes. I thought of that for you. I was pleased for you.

RYAN: Why thank you Miss Caroline, on your happiness for my behalf.

CAROLINE: Mmm Hmm. Sure. Oh and I know it was a great year for male performances… but on the women’s side… c’mon. Keira Knightley? I am so sorry. I think they could have squeezed in someone else. She’s a cute girl. “Pride & Prejudice” was a cute movie; but, oh my God – Best Actress? I think not.

RYAN: Whatever. She won’t win it.

CAROLINE: She just shouldn’t even be nominated.

RYAN: And all the love for “Good Night and Good Luck?”

CAROLINE: Don’t even get us started.

RYAN: Anyway, I’m really looking forward to the awards show.

CAROLINE: I know. We have over a month to wait.

RYAN: I know. What are we gonna do between now and then?

CAROLINE: We’re gonna have to see some crap-February movies.

RYAN: Will you go to some movies with me?

CAROLINE: I think I will.

Thanks For Viewing The Oscar Nominees

I enjoyed your discussion on the oscar nominations. I just want to add few more comments. How great was it to see William Hurt nominated for History of Violence?!! I was thrilled to see him returning to the award scene after almost 20 years. He will not win but how great that he got acknowledged. And let’s talk about Scarlett not getting a nomination for Match Point. Absolutely insane…she was wonderful and if Keira was nominated…Scarlett should have been included as well!! What about Ed Harris?? Constantly overlooked….. Thankfully Paltrow did not get a nomination….if she did but Claire Danes (Shopgirl) and Laura Linney (The Squid and the Whale) did not…it would be another huge injustice!!! Finally, The Constant Gardener should have been included in the best movie category. Thanks for the opportunity to add to your oscars review….I will keep reading your postings!! Natasha
