ONCE

CAROLINE: I took myself to see “Once” and let me tell you, I’m so glad I did.

RYAN: Oh?

CAROLINE: This is a little movie from Fox Searchlight but I highly recommend if you’re at all interested in music. It’s got some of the prettiest songs I’ve heard lately.

RYAN: Clear something up for me. In the trailer for this movie, it’s touted as a musical. However, I have a hunch that it’s not truly a musical, but more a film with music in it. True or false?

CAROLINE: It’s definitely the latter. But music really runs the film. It’s about a musician in Dublin who plays guitar and sings and writes songs and this girl he meets. They collaborate and beautiful songs are the result. Basically, the entire film is about the songs they do together, so in that sense, it is a musical.

RYAN: Is it a love story?

CAROLINE: Well, sort of. I don’t want to give away too much. But I did hear that the two co-stars have been hooking up in real life as they tour to promote the movie. I think they have close to a twenty-year age difference. Awww yeah…

RYAN: So was this film emotionally engaging? And by that I mean did you cry?

CAROLINE: I didn’t cry but some of the songs are so beautiful that I could see why someone might. In fact, as soon as I got out of the movie, I took myself to Barnes & Noble to buy the soundtrack.

RYAN: I get it. You loved the music. But does one have to see this movie on the big screen?

CAROLINE: No. You could definitely wait to see it on TV. But having said that, if you’re at all inclined to see it, please do. It’s really great.

RYAN: Sounds like it’s a welcome alternative to the summer’s blockbusters. I might have to haul arse myself to catch it before it leaves the theaters.

CAROLINE: I recommend it to one and all. Here’s the trailer to pique your interest:

I haven’t even heard of this movie. Sometimes it sucks living in Kentucky.
