NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN
RYAN: I don’t even remember the name of the movie we just saw…
CAROLINE: “No Country for Old Men.”
RYAN: …because it was one of the most terrifying films I’ve ever seen.
CAROLINE: It’s the new Coen brothers movie, and it stars Javier Bardem as a psycho killer with crazy hair.
RYAN: Seriously, what was up with that hair?
CAROLINE: I know, right? I think it was a ‘70s relic, because the movie takes place in 1980.
RYAN: He’s such a great actor, but he disrobes halfway through the film and he’s so out of shape.
CAROLINE: Javier Bardem? Seriously? He’s so long and lean.
RYAN: He’s not fat, but he had no tone, no musculature.
CAROLINE: He looked pretty damn good to me. And he’s positively terrifying in this movie. Josh Brolin co-stars in this film, and he’s having the best week ever between the release of this movie and the success of “American Gangster.”
RYAN: I was so blown away by this movie. I really didn’t know what to expect, but from the minute it started I was sick to my stomach and that’s how I felt through most of the film.
CAROLINE: This movie is a true thriller. Javier Bardem’s character is a straight-up psychopath and he’s just chilling.
RYAN: This is the first movie I’ve been this scared of since “Misery.” I could see myself having nightmares tonight. The mere sight of Javier Bardem, even out of focus in the background, gave me chills like you can’t comprehend.
CAROLINE: After a few minutes of the film, you just lay eyes on him and think, “Oh no.”
RYAN: Totally! Like, “What’s he gonna do now?”
CAROLINE: I also thought Josh Brolin was amazing. He gets to do a lot more in this movie than he does in “American Gangster.” It’s a really understated performance and I dug it.
RYAN: He’s very natural and laid-back in this role. Tommy Lee Jones is great as the sheriff but he’s so old looking! Very natural though – clearly the man isn’t getting any Botox. He’s even getting Oscar buzz.
CAROLINE: LBH, he’s always great. But he had a couple extraneous scenes that I didn’t think the movie needed. I almost felt like they kept them in the movie just because he’s Tommy Lee Jones and they wanted him to have a bigger part.
RYAN: There’s one scene of his at the end that I didn’t even pay attention to; I just kind of zoned out and was like, “Why is this scene in the movie?” All told, they probably could have shaved about 10 minutes off the movie.
CAROLINE: It’s 2 hours long, which is fine, but I lost a little steam in the last half hour.
RYAN: There’s also a Scottish actress in the film, Kelly Macdonald, who does a killer Southern accent.
CAROLINE: She doesn’t have a huge part, but she’s excellent and you really start to like her character. But FYI, it’s a really violent film, and very bloody. It’s not for the faint of heart, but it’s worth seeing for the performances.
RYAN: There’s also violence to dogs in the movie, which I want to point out since that’s upsetting to a lot of people.
CAROLINE: Yes, but there’s one scene where Josh Brolin shoots a dog and when it dies, it looks like a stuffed animal. It’s kind of hilarious and really fake. Bottom line?
RYAN: Honestly, this movie scared me so much that I almost regret seeing it. But wow, we just experienced the power of movies. This film is crazy, and I loved it.
CAROLINE: The big guns are out, people. Oscar season is upon us, full throttle. This movie is so well directed and the scenery is amazing.
RYAN: I think this is the best movie the Coen brothers have ever done.
CAROLINE: As long as you can handle the violence, you should definitely see this movie.
