New on DVD
CAROLINE: It’s a much better week for DVD releases than it has been lately, starting with “Watchmen,” which I didn’t love. But I know it’s popular with the kids and its legions of comic book fans.
RYAN: I didn’t love it either, but I definitely appreciated it for the acting and some of the great action and effects. Jackie Earle Haley was great. You get to see an animated penis. And the opening sequence is incredible!
CAROLINE: I loved Denny as The Comedian, but other than that, I wasn’t engaged at all. I so don’t care about comic books. And it’s way too long.
RYAN: It’s too long, yes, but real fans will definitely want to check out the 2-disc special edition. Truly though, you should watch this on Blu-ray; the full theatrical experience will be lost otherwise.
CAROLINE: Next up is what was ostensibly a kids’ movie, “Coraline.” But you said it was kind of freaky.
RYAN: Definitely! I really want you to rent this movie. It’s so unique and thrilling and creepy. You will love it. Plus it’s from the same director as “The Nightmare Before Christmas.”
CAROLINE: I must admit I’m intrigued by it. I was dissing it when it came out because it’s a kids’ movie; but you may have convinced me otherwise.
RYAN: I’m telling you, it’s very adult in its themes. I was actually afraid a couple times. And Dakota Fanning is excellent as the voice of Coraline.
CAROLINE: I like how Coraline’s name is similar to mine.
RYAN: Then you’ll love this movie; people are always mispronouncing her name and calling her Caroline. This has your name written all over it – literally. It’s a must rent!!
