New on DVD
CAROLINE: It’s a pretty big week for DVD releases. Let’s start with the Oscar nominated “Doubt,” which certainly wasn’t the best movie of last year; but it was pretty good.
RYAN: I adore Amy Adams, and of course, Meryl is always phenomenal. Philip Seymour Hoffman blew me away too. It’s a stellar cast. They were all Oscar nominated for this.
CAROLINE: It’s worth renting for the scene between Meryl and Viola Davis alone. That scene is unreal.
RYAN: It’s a pretty intense flick, so don’t go in expecting anything light-hearted.
CAROLINE: Overall, I’d say it’s pretty good, but not great. The direction wasn’t up to snuff, but the cast and the story makes it enjoyable.
RYAN: Next up is the sci-fi flick “The Day The Earth Stood Still,” which I saw without you and enjoyed a lot more than I thought I would.
CAROLINE: Yes, but I caught it on a plane a few weeks ago! It was so annoying; they cut out all the action/violent scenes.
RYAN: Rude. This is a remake of a 1951 film, but it’s really more of a re-imagining. They changed a lot and made it more about environmentalism and stuff.
CAROLINE: I thought it was merely OK; but then again, I was watching it on a plane.
RYAN: Yeah, you can’t really judge it from that. It’s one to see on the big screen. Or a giant TV, if you can.
CAROLINE: I’m not a big sci-fi fan, so I’d say skip it. Last up, we have the Jim Carrey vehicle, “Yes Man,” which I found surprisingly hilarious.
RYAN: It was quite funny, and it also has Zooey Deschanel, whom I adore. Her acting wasn’t atrocious for a change.
CAROLINE: There are several laugh-out-loud funny moments in this movie, even if some of them are a little juvenile. The cast was so appealing too: Bradley Cooper, Rhys Darby from “Flight of the Conchords” and John Michael Higgins. And let’s face it – Jim Carrey is still really funny.
RYAN: He seemed very relaxed in this movie, and it was a pleasure to watch. I hope he has a little career renaissance after this.
