Neighbors Review

NeighborsRYAN: This new comedy stars Seth Rogen and Zac Efron.  It actually starts off quite strong.  I was laughing along and was into it, thinking it was really fun but that only lasted about 20 minutes.

CHUCK: Yeah it felts like an unfunny 90 minute joke to me.  It’s just the same thing over and over again – a married couple with a baby trying to get their farmhouse neighbors to be quite for the duration of the movie.

RYAN: It’s so monotonous.

CHUCK: I didn’t even like the beginning.

RYAN: Overall, I like the performances – I love Seth Rogen; he doesn’t annoy or perturb me.  I like Rose Byrne and hearing her authentic Aussie accent.  I enjoy them both except this film is so unoriginal and outrageous.  In the wake of movies that go for the funny-shock moments like Bridesmaids or Meet the Fockers, This is the End – this movie strives for that vibe but is just obnoxious instead.  It feels like the writer and cast were just desperately going after the laugh instead of nailing it naturally.

CHUCK: I’ve never really been into the whole bro/frat culture; I don’t find it that amusing.  But I love movies like Animal House or Revenge of the Nerds.  I can’t really think of another one since then that’s really funny.  This movie really isn’t original.  It’s so beyond plausible.

RYAN: Oh totally!  All I thought throughout the movie was, “Where are the other neighbors on the other side of the house and behind them and across the street?”  I’m all for the suspension of disbelief in a movie but I simply couldn’t apply it here no matter how hard I tried.  This movie was just absurd.

CHUCK: Apparently all the other neighbors in the hood were on an extended leave of absence or whatever.

RYAN: It’s stupid.  Zefron is pretty but he’s just never a strong actor.  He’s half naked a lot, though, and clearly has a good trainer.

CHUCK: I think the last thing I saw him in was The Lucky Ones which was mediocre, at best and I kept thinking I’d rather watch that movie again than see this one.  He’s just a cute guy.  Same thing with Dave Franco.

RYAN: I love James so much and Dave is kinda like a James-Franco-Lite, but he really overacts in this movie – the whole cast does.  It’s like watching a play sometimes but with cameras up in there – they’re all mugging so much.  I did enjoy Lisa Kudrow though.

CHUCK: It was fun seeing her but eh, I didn’t really care.

RYAN: Christopher Mintz-Plasse… if he never made another movie, I’d be happy.

CHUCK: Seriously.  He was lame.

RYAN: It’s the most drugs and sex in a movie since The Wolf of Wall Street. I shouldn’t even make that comparison.  It’s a hard R and it’s raunchy and even gross sometimes. I don’t wanna sound prude but whatever.

CHUCK: I wasn’t necessarily grossed out, I was just over it.  just watch the trailer.  All the best parts were there and the rest is just ridiculous.

RYAN: It’s a pretty tasteless, dumb comedy.  There are far better movies to see in theaters now.
