MY SOUL TO TAKE 3D

RYAN: I was indulging in a total geek-fest-day on Saturday, hanging out at the New York Comic Con, checking out all the nerds dressed up like Batman with my pal Jim and thought the perfect way to top it off would be to check out the new Wes Craven thriller.

CAROLINE: OMG you didn’t! It didn’t screen for critics and I have zero interest. Thanks for taking one for the team.

RYAN: Of course. It started out, actually, kind of brilliantly. The opening scene was very intense and scary and psychological-thrillery and I was totally into it. There’s, like, this split personality serial killer slant.

CAROLINE: That’s an intrigue.

RYAN: But then the rest of the movie was a lot more deflated. It wasn’t a total wreck but the momentum definitely went asunder after the first fifteen minutes.

CAROLINE: How was the cast?

RYAN: Queen Latifah was great.

CAROLINE: She’s in it?

RYAN: I’m kidding. [laughs’ No one major really but some of the kids were pretty good. I’d say the stand out performance was the red-haired girl who plays the Jesus freak of the bunch.

CAROLINE: There’s one in every teen movie these days. Amanda Bynes in Easy A, anyone?

RYAN: Classic. This movie follows the seven high schoolers born on the day that crazy serial killer died. It’s a little bit Final Destination as you basically await each one’s demise.

CAROLINE: A lot of thrillers are like that. It’s formulaic.

RYAN: Right. There wasn’t anything totally original or breathtaking about this movie but I definitely jumped a few times and tensed up.

CAROLINE: How was the 3D?

RYAN: Not so great. It was converted to 3D and I think you could only really notice it, like, once.

CAROLINE: And the ticket prices are so much higher for the 3D movies… I bet that’s why they’re upconverting so many of them lately.

RYAN: Possibly. There are also some pretty sizable plot discrepancies in the story. Jim and I were talking about certain things that were just too far fetched for a high school story and some other i’s not dotted after exiting the theater.

CAROLINE: Unacceptable.

— BOTTOM LINE —

RYAN: I didn’t hate it but it’s also not a great scary movie. There are some that I just think shouldn’t be missed and I can’t even say you have to rent this one… I’d rather recommend renting ones like The Last House on the Left, Orphan or Funny Games before seeing this one.
