MR. BROOKS

CAROLINE: Here’s your alternative to the comedies and animated films of late: “Mr. Brooks,” starring Kevin Costner.

RYAN: Also co-starring Demi Moore, who looks fabulous.

CAROLINE: I think she’s had too much fat sucked out of her face. She’s looking a little drawn.

RYAN
: Really? I think she looks beautiful.

CAROLINE: For a woman of her age, she needs fuller cheeks.

RYAN: For a woman of her age, she doesn’t at all look her age.

CAROLINE: That’s true and it’s called plastic surgery. But I digress. “Mr. Brooks” is a dark and twisted movie, but I enjoyed it.

RYAN: It’s reminiscent of “Silence of the Lambs,” and it’s got serial killing.

CAROLINE: It has a very interesting premise. I don’t think I’ve seen a movie quite like it before. Kevin Costner plays a pillar of the community who also happens to love killing people. And William Hurt plays his evil alter ego.

RYAN: I loved the chemistry between Kevin Costner and William Hurt. There were a few really funny moments between them, so the comedy balances out the macabre.

CAROLINE: And even Dane Cook, who we usually think of as cheesy comedian guy from “Employee of the Month,” plays a more serious role in this movie and he’s pretty good at it.
RYAN: He plays an offbeat dude, and I was impressed. I don’t think he’s a brilliant actor or anything, but he’s pretty good.

CAROLINE: It’s definitely an interesting movie, but it’s quite bloody. I didn’t mind it personally, but for the squeamish among us, you should take note.

RYAN: There are definitely some serious slasher moments.

CAROLINE: Big time. But more than that, it’s kind of a sick movie.

RYAN: I think of it more as a mystery with a lot of twists. It’s a good thriller.

CAROLINE: There are some fun sub-plots too, especially the one where Demi Moore, who plays a detective, is being stalked by a murderer who she arrested in the past. She’s pretty badass in this movie.

RYAN: Bottom line?

CAROLINE: I really liked this movie, though I don’t think it’s for everyone. I find it really odd that they released this in June, especially since it opened against the biggest comedy of the summer, “Knocked Up.” Right now is usually the season of action flicks, comedies and family films, and I think this movie is going to get buried and most people won’t see it.

RYAN: I think it’s a good movie, and worth seeing. Given all the blockbusters that are out right now, people might not see it, but read it here, folks – this is a good movie that’s worthy of your money.

CAROLINE: If you’re not quite up for the gore of “Hostel: Part II,” but you like action and violence, check out “Mr. Brooks.”
