After nearly six years, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony have brought “El Cantante” to the big screen, and the Latin community should be thrilled, right? Apparently, not so much. Not only are critics slamming the film, but also several salsa stars (some of whom consulted on the film) are hatin’ on it too. Why? They think J. Lo and Marc-y Marc are “exploiting” the memory of salsa innovator Hector Lavoe, showing too much of his drug addiction in the film and not focusing enough on his struggles in the music industry.

The crowning blow? Lavoe’s own former band leader and partner, Willie Colon, a consultant on the film, said he was not pleased with how the movie turned out. And of course, “El Cantante” failed to crack the top 10 this weekend. Granted it was released on fewer screens than some of the other new releases, but LBH – when it comes acting, J. Lo is this decade’s Madonna.
