MARIE ANTOINETTE

RYAN: We just saw “Mary Antonetty” and I’ve never before wanted to eat little sweets, desserts, treats and cakes more than right now.
CAROLINE: I would like a personal pastry chef at my beck and call to have mounds and mounds of cakes and confections all around me… at all times.
RYAN: OMG! This movie made me hungry! It really brings out the sugar cravings.

CAROLINE: Thank God we had Junior Mints.
RYAN: And popcorn. I’m pleasantly surprised by this movie. I found it kinda cool.
CAROLINE: Yeah, I enjoyed it. It’s not the greatest movie ever; but, it was fun and the costumes were fabulous. Even Kirsten Dunst, with her vampire teeth, looked gorge because they put her in lovely hues of pink and blue.
RYAN: I actually believe the movie will get an Oscar nom for best costumes. And the scenery was incredible. It’s probably my favorite Sofia Coppola film…
CAROLINE: You liked it better than “Lost in Translation”?
RYAN: That’s right. I did indeed. It’s gayer.
CAROLINE: It’s definitely Gary without the “r.” We know it received much ridicule at Cannes but we’ll say we liked it, because we did.
RYAN: Oui. It’s slow in parts. And I even wished for things to happen at some moments.
CAROLINE: Not a lot happens in this movie, to be honest. It’s sort of a portrait of Marie Antoinette’s life upon getting married at a very young age and the way she’s so rich and hangs out with her friends the whole time; has her own little house that she retreats to. She lives in the lap of luxury.

RYAN: I wanna live like that. I wanna be a queen.
CAROLINE: I dunno. She seemed bored to me.
RYAN: You just missed a major opportunity for a joke there.
CAROLINE: Oh! You are a queen, honey. Love it and embrace it.
RYAN: (laughs) I wanna be a different kind of queen… with a crown and the cakes and everything.
CAROLINE: It makes me wanna go study up on my French history and figure out what really happened to Marie Antoinette.
RYAN: That too. Jason Schwartzman was fun and funny and did his typical Schwartzman thang.
CAROLINE: He’s so homely. But yes. He was fine. I’m just tired of him being cast in movies because he is a Coppola.
RYAN: Judy Davis was great but waaay underused.
CAROLINE: …like two lines.
RYAN: And then there was Moaning Myrtle from the “Harry Potter” movies.
CAROLINE: And also Molly Shannon, formerly of SNL.
RYAN: That’s right. And Kirsten Dunst might get an Oscar nomination out of this.
CAROLINE: For reals?
RYAN: No.
CAROLINE: (chuckles)
RYAN: But I wish she would… I’d just love to see her be nominated. If it’s slim pickin’s this season, she could get nominated.
CAROLINE: She wasn’t that good. She was fine. But she was Kirsten Dunst playing a rich, spoiled girl. I didn’t feel the angst of the queen. But it wasn’t a political film… you weren’t meant to feel that way. There was that one scene where she was supposed to be crying and it was the fakest crying I’ve ever seen in a movie.
RYAN: I thought she was really crying and then you pointed out there were no tears.
CAROLINE: Thank you. I rest my case.
RYAN: Bottom line?
CAROLINE: I really liked this. It surprised me in a good way. I don’t know if it’s a film for everyone. But if you like movies, Sofia Coppola and Kirsten Dunst, I’d say absolutely see it. It’s fun. It was shot at Versailles. It looks stunning.
RYAN: It’s a period piece. It’s definitely a chick flick. The wigs were fab. There’s a lot of eye candy. And bring candy with you… coz you’re gonna be HUNGRY!
