LOVE & OTHER DRUGS
RYAN: Anne Hathaway is probably my favorite actress so I couldn’t have been more excited to see Love & Other Drugs, which co-stars Jake Gyllenhaal. And don’t forget they played husband and wife in Brokeback Mountain.
CAROLINE: I was psyched for this movie too. Even though Anne H. isn’t always my favorite, I usually enjoy the movies she’s in. And I’m always up for a romance.
RYAN: Sadly, this movie really disappointed me. I liked the first 45 minutes but the rest pretty much stank.
CAROLINE: You saw this movie a few days before I did and told me to lower my expectations, which helped because I liked it. There are definitely some maudlin moments and I don’t know that it’s the best romance I’ve ever seen… but I was pretty into it. I liked the story and I liked that it took place in the mid-90s. They totally captured the music of the time; Spin Doctors and even the Macarena.
RYAN: Anne and Jake’s characters are some of the most fun, clever and wittiest I’ve seen in a long time; but the second half of the movie was kind of Autumn in New York to me. That was the first movie we saw together, and possibly the worst.
CAROLINE: I totally hear you. Anne Hathaway’s character has a debilitating illness and a lot of the movie is spent on that. It gets a little tired. “I’m sick, you shouldn’t be with me!” “But I want to be with you!” Enough already. How many movies have we seen about this topic?
RYAN: For me it was sort of like last year’s My Sister’s Keeper, though not as extreme. But the greatest thing about this movie was Anne’s hair. It was so full and voluminous and curly. She almost looked like Kirsten Dunst in Interview With A Vampire or Bryce Dallas Howard in the most recent Twilight movie.
CAROLINE: OMG totally! I thought she looked gorge in almost every scene. But the main thing I noticed was that her boobs were everywhere in this movie, as was Jake’s butt. There’s so much nudity!
RYAN: Naturally, Anne’s boobs are an afterthought for me. But it was kind of shocking how often she showed them. I was like, “Just do Playboy and get it over with!”
CAROLINE: I was pretty surprised by that. There’s a lot of sex had in this movie.
RYAN: Jake and Anne do have good chemistry, which isn’t surprising given how great they were together in Brokeback. If they do another film together, they’ll be a modern day Rock Hudson and Doris Day.
CAROLINE: Supporting cast members include Oliver Platt, Judy Greer, Gabriel Macht and Hank Azaria, who are all great.
RYAN: I love Judy Greer and would someday like to see her play either sister to or lover of Juliette Lewis. Hank Azaria was fine, but he had one scene at the end that bored me to tears and should have been cut.
CAROLINE: The movie is a full two hours and could probably have been cut down a little. While it’s heavy handed at times, it also has some really funny moments. I chuckled a few times. I’d call it a romantic dramedy.
— BOTTOM LINE —
RYAN: It’s good, not great, but definitely pop culturally worthy because of these two great leads who enjoy a verbal tennis match during the best parts of the film. I wasn’t a huge fan of this movie, but I’ll see anything Annie’s in.
CAROLINE: I’m sometimes skeptical of Anne Hathaway, but I really liked her in this. Her hair was indeed phenomenal and Jake was looking H-O-T. I didn’t enjoy the sappy moments where they fought over Anne’s illness, but some of the other scenes redeemed the movie. Overall, I enjoyed myself. I’d agree it’s good, not great.

Yep! I'd rent it, too. I got the chance to watch the trailer on YouTube and for me it wasn't as heavy or great as I hoped it would be. Jake and Anne are two of the best actors out there, so, you expect that the outcome would be somehow great but judging from your review, it's the same as I thought it was.
