Live Review: 2014 Golden Globe Awards

8pm Wooooo Hooooogolden-globes-2011-logo

RYAN: I love the GGs because not only does it celebrate the year’s best movies but also because it’s become one of the funniest, borderline controversial nights live from Hollywood, depending on the hosts!

CAROLINE: True..  the fashion on the red carpet has already been doing this year proud.

RYAN: There was much advanced buzz about the show open and Whoa! It didn’t disappoint!!  Tina & Amy both look beautiful!  But I loved Reese trying to get a selfie with Julia Louis Dreyfus.  I actually LOLd quite a bit during their open.

CAROLINE: Let’s get to the categories!  Best Supporting Actress – hang on! This is kind of an upset?

RYAN: Yes! I think most were betting on Lupita Nyong’o but Jenny Law takes it for American Hustle.

CAROLINE: I know we’re only talking about movies, but c’mon, Jacqueline Bisset – how long can it take to walk up there?

RYAN: And prepare a speech.  What is she on?! Sizneriously.

CAROLINE: That may be one of the most bizarre and awkward speeches in awards show history!

RYAN: What’s interesting about Jen’s win is that whereas there are usually clear predictions and frontrunners for each categories, this year there is actually a close race because so many movies were so good!

8:36pm

RYAN: Techy malfunction!  It’s live but how to they mess up the prompter?  How gorgeous is Margot Robbie though? I’m loving her dress.

CAROLINE: That was funny and cute how self deprecating she was.

RYAN: I like Paula Patton but that ruffle is a little much.  It looks like it attacked her!

8:43pm

RYAN: This show is a mess! The timing is SO off.  People can’t get up there fast enough – the cameras are all over the place, the speeches are profane… it’s cray.  Is Tom Cruise producing?

CAROLINE: (laughs) Why Tom Cruise?

RYAN: He’s cray right? (laughs) It’s like this is the first time this show has been put on.  Maybe there’s a new director, but it’s not tight.

8:51pm

CAROLINE: Best Score goes to All is Lost.

RYAN: This is a harder category to quantify.  I saw the film but the score didn’t really stand out for me.   I preferred the scores for The Book Thief and Gravity.

CAROLINE: And Best Song – U2 takes if for Madela: Long Walk to Freedom. I know you wanted the song from Frozen to win – you love Idina Menzel and I actually went to school with the songwriter.

RYAN: I am SO bummed about this and actually think they got it wrong; we may see U2 sweep this season but I stand by Let it Go.  Of course, a rock song is very different than a showtune.  Tear.

9:07pm

RYAN: God I love Robert Downey Jr.  He looks amazing and he’s just so effortlessly charming!! The winner for Best Actress Musical or Comedy – Amy Adams!! Go Amy!!  And thank you for showing the rest of the room how to make a speech!! Brava!!

CAROLINE: I couldn’t agree more.  She’s a class act!! Her speech actually just made me misty!

9:21pm

RYAN: This was the one sure bet of the season – like Anne Hathaway last year, Jared Leto is expected to sweep this season for Dallas Buyers Club. And you knew it when you saw it.  I love that he is so appreciative after so many years away from acting.

CAROLINE: He’s come a long way from My So-Called Life. And sweet of him to thank those who inspired him.

9:28pm

RYAN: Best Screenplay – Her. Are you even kidding me?!

CAROLINE: Ha! I liked this one.  I know you hated it but here we go!  This happens.  Spike Jonze is an interesting guy.

RYAN: I’m not thrilled but ya win some, ya lose some.

9:52pm

CAROLINE: And Best Animated Feature goes to Frozen.

RYAN: Hello! Thank you!!! It should have won Best Song too but this is a nice bit of redemption.  It’s so deserving.  One of my fave animated movies ever made!!

10:10pm

RYAN: Diane Keaton’s acceptance on behalf of Woody Allen’s Cecil B. DeMille Award is phenom – that was just my favorite part of the whole show!

CAROLINE: I love that she sang at the end.  It seemed like she had that entire speech memorized.  That was beautiful and touching.  But how rude that Woody couldn’t bother to show up for it!

RYAN: Every A-Lister in the audience was captivated.

10:17pm

CAROLINE: Best Director is Alfonso Cuaron for Gravity.

RYAN: Yes!! He was the frontrunner but I love it.  I interviewed him when he director the third Harry Potter movie but loved him ever since his The Little Princess. And Gravity was waymazing!!

10:27pm

CAROLINE: Here’s a big one – Best Actor Musical or Comedy… Leonardo DiCaprio! Wow he rarely wins anything.

RYAN: I love it!! He doesn’t stand much of a chance against Chiwetel and Matt at the other awards show, but this is cool.  He was great in The Wolf of Wall Street.

10:37pm

CAROLINE: And here’s one of the Best Pictures – Musical of Comedy – American Hustle!

RYAN: I’m glad of it, but enough already with separating the Drama from the Musical or Comedy.  American Hustle isn’t even a comedy.  This is all so ridiculous already.

10:45pm

CAROLINE: Best Actress Drama – Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine.

RYAN: Haha How Leo said Philomenia!! LOL But Cate was really craymazing in that film.  I just love Cate. And I love her speech and her comment about speeding up with anxiety but I could have done without the cut to Judy Garland.

CAROLINE: I knew that would bug you.  Oh – Best Actor in a Drama – Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club.

RYAN: He’s come such a long way! It was really between him and Chiwetel.  I’m thrilled for him though.  He was really so good in the movie and he’s evolved so brilliantly as an actor.

10:56pm

RYAN: And here we go – cool hair color, Johnny!! I like it!! Best Picture Drama is 12 Years a Slave. Brilliant!  So good and a true story.

CAROLINE: It was a frontrunner.  It will be interesting to see how it fares against American Hustle at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards and the Oscars!

RYAN: It’s a race for the ages.  What a super night.  A relatively tame show and a bit underwhelming compared to how funny last year seemed for Tina and Amy – and a messy production but still a fun night!  A fabulous way to kick off the awards season… See ya Thursday night at the Critic’s Choice Awards!
