LEATHERHEADS
RYAN: Rarely has such beauty graced the silver screen as Renée Zellweger in the new George Clooney-helmed “Leatherheads.”
CAROLINE: I can honestly say that I would have rather preferred any other actress in the role. Rachel McAdams would have been ideal. But apparently it had to be Renée; and even though she’s a decent actress, she’s just so homely. I don’t even know if she has eyes. They’re like tiny, squinty slits.
RYAN: She’s basically playing the exact same character she played in “Down With Love.” She’s got the attitude; there’s a lot of quick banter and wit. I thought she did a great job in this movie, and her wigs made her look very soft and pretty. She’s physically very ugly, but she looked as good in this movie as she’s ever gonna look.
CAROLINE: I really dug this movie. We brought along our friends Jenny and Cosmo to the screening with us, and we all enjoyed it. It takes place in the ‘20s, and the music is great.
RYAN: Yes, thanks to Randy Newman. He even makes a cameo, so look for it.
CAROLINE: I loved the opening scene of the film. I want that cow to get a Best Supporting Actor nod.
RYAN: How brilliant is that cow!?!?
CAROLINE: Best acting by an animal in a movie ever. But anyway, I think George Clooney did an amazing job of capturing the era in this movie. The costumes, the dialogue and the humor are all fabulous. Some of the jokes are a little dumb and screwball-ish but that’s the point, and it totally works.
RYAN: Based on the trailer, I thought this was gonna be a slapstick-y movie about football for guys and I wasn’t that psyched for it. But it really pays homage to old movies and filmmaking, and it totally succeeds. Clooney really knows what he’s doing as a director.
CAROLINE: LBH, let’s be honest, Mary, there’s just something about Clooney. Every woman and gay knows it. He’s just so smooth, so great looking and so much fun to watch. And every guy wants to be him. I, for one, spent a good amount of time during the movie wondering what it would be like to make out with him. And you know I normally love John Krasinski, who’s also great in this; but even he can’t compare to George.
RYAN: George Clooney has never done it for me, but I’ve gotta hand it to you here – that John Krasinski has finally won me over.
CAROLINE: Gasp! Seriously?
RYAN: You’ve always been a huge fan and I never really got him until this movie. He’s so great in this role and he looks so de-gorgeous that I found myself fantasizing about wearing a “Team Krasinski” T-shirt.
CAROLINE: He’s so tall, which really works for him.
RYAN: And he’s got a great bum.
CAROLINE: I just can’t get over how Renée Z. is still doing that smirky sneer that she started in “Jerry Maguire” and continues to this day. It’s half smirk, half talking out of the side of her mouth, and it’s got to stop.
RYAN: Clearly, she can’t help it. It’s like a birth defect. Bottom line?
CAROLINE: This is a really fun movie that I think my parents will love, but also people in their 20s and 30s. It’s a little bit old school but still hilarious. There were several laugh out loud moments.
RYAN: I loved this movie. It was supposed to be released last fall, presumably as an Oscar contender, but then it got pushed to the spring. Normally, this isn’t a good sign, but this movie is great and I’d highly recommend it on the big screen. It’s fun for all ages. It’s a total romantic comedy chick-flick, masked as a dude comedy.
JENNY: I’d like to make note of the homoerotic glances between George Clooney and Jim from “The Office” on the football field. It was really overt and titillating.
RYAN: Good call, Jenny!
COSMO: I think this movie succeeded where “The Good German” failed.
CAROLINE: Amen!
