KNOCKED UP
RYAN: Oh my God, “Knocked Up!”
CAROLINE: It’s the new Judd Apatow…
RYAN: …who is fast becoming one of my favorite directors.
CAROLINE: I love him. I love Paul Rudd. I love Steve Carell, who makes a brief cameo in this film.
RYAN: I love Katherine Heigl – hello??
CAROLINE: Oh honey, that goes without saying. We adore her and she’s on our favorite show.
CAROLINE: She is phenomenal in this hilarious dramedy. There’s lots of drama in this “Knocked Up” – don’t let all the comedic stuff fool you.
RYAN: It is so fabulously written, as well as directed. Kudos to Judd Apatow for being such a brilliant writer. The laughs just do not stop.
CAROLINE: There was a big article on him in the Times’ magazine last weekend, and I read that he drew on real-life experiences with his wife for this movie and used some of their actual conversations as dialogue.
RYAN: And she’s in the movie.
CAROLINE: Yes, she plays Katherine Heigl’s sister.
RYAN: And there’s also a great performance from one of our favorite SNL’ers, Kristen Wiig.
CAROLINE: I adore her! She plays Katherine Heigl’s bitchy colleague. Someone needs to cast her in more movies immediately. She is so freaking funny.
RYAN: To just look at her is to laugh.
CAROLINE: “Knocked Up” is surprisingly tenderhearted and warm. It’s definitely a comedy with tons of laugh-out-loud moments, but it’s also got a lot of poignancy.
RYAN: I know that it gave the film some depth to have the romantic lead guy be so fat and ugly, but there was part of me that was annoyed at how mismatched he and Katherine were. But it did give the movie a dose of reality.
CAROLINE: My only complaint would be that it’s way too long. A romantic comedy should end at a hundred minutes if you ask me.
RYAN: I can actually think of scenes right now that I would have cut out. It’s easily twenty minutes too long.
CAROLINE: It really started to drag towards the end. I felt like I was watching the DVD version with extra scenes thrown in, but really I just wanted the shorter theatrical version.
RYAN: I remember reading ahead of time that there were some celebrity cameos in this film and I was worried when I saw Ryan Seacrest on that list – but he’s super funny.
CAROLINE: He’s onscreen for about three minutes and he’s hysterical.
RYAN: This movie was so well conceived, and only Judd Apatow could have the access to some of the cameos because of the success of “The 40-Year-Old Virgin.” It’s such a fun movie.
CAROLINE: And it’s totally true to life. I mean, I’ve neither married nor been knocked up, but all the relationship issues and pregnancy scare issues are so realistically portrayed that it made it really fun to watch.
RYAN: We were accompanied to the film by our friend Joe, with whom I was discussing how well this movie reflects male/female relationships.
CAROLINE: Totally. It was so real that it was almost like you were eavesdropping on someone’s life.
RYAN: This flick could have been the film adaptation of “Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus.”
RYAN: This movie is a winner. I may be a blind fan of this writer/director but I enjoyed this almost as much as I enjoyed “The 40-Year-Old Virgin.” So go out and see it and be entertained ad nauseam.
CAROLINE: The casting is great and the music is a lot of fun too. They even played “Toxic” by Britney Spears at one point. There’s lots of sex and drugs and you’ll love it. See it immediately!
