KNIGHT AND DAY
RYAN: I didn’t get to see Knight and Day with you but I have a real baditude about this movie. I think it’s because I have a low tolerance for Tom Cruise and his antics lately. How was the movie?
CAROLINE: Unlike you, I was so excited to see this movie; it was one of my most anticipated of the summer, actually. And I’m happy to report that it did not disappoint. What you see is what you get, so if you liked the trailer, as I did, you’ll like the movie.
RYAN: How’s the chemistry between Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz? They were in Vanilla Sky together many years ago.
CAROLINE: I think you and I were the only ones who saw that movie. But their chemistry is okay. I don’t always buy Tom Cruise as a romantic lead because there’s something oddly asexual about him. I kind of felt that way in Jerry Maguire too… like I didn’t really believe that pivotal moment where all of a sudden he was supposed to be in love with Renée Zellweger. It’s kind of the same thing here.
RYAN: He seems insincere to me, and maybe that’s why.
CAROLINE: Having said that, I think this is the perfect role for him. It’s a combination of action and humor, a dash of Jerry Maguire smarm plus the cool stunts of his Mission: Impossible character.
RYAN: I do like him in both of those roles.
CAROLINE: He also has a brief scene where he showcases his run, which is like no other in an action movie.
RYAN: I know how you love his running skills.
CAROLINE: It’s just a really fun, action-packed movie. There’s a real sense of adventure and escapism, which I always appreciate in a summer movie. I think anyone watching it almost wants to be Cameron Diaz, at least for a day, and go on this crazy journey with someone who you don’t know and aren’t sure if he’s crazy or not. She’s just a regular girl… until she meets Tom Cruise, her life turns upside down and he takes her on the adventure of a lifetime.
RYAN: So you liked this role for her?
CAROLINE: Definitely. She’s getting a little old for the rom com, so I like it when she branches out… though this movie does still have elements of romance and comedy. I think she’s good at action roles too.
RYAN: Isn’t Tom Cruise so much shorter than her?
CAROLINE: Yes, but they do a really good job of hiding that. It’s first and foremost an action flick. There are some great fight scenes, and Tom Cruise does most of his own stunts so that makes it really exciting to watch. And they travel to gorgeous places in Spain and Austria and some tropical island, so I can only imagine how much fun it was to film this.
RYAN: Was there any one action scene akin to the helicopter chase in The A-Team that everyone will be talking about?
CAROLINE: I think the one they’re pimping as the big action scene is the one in the trailer where Cameron flips in front of Tom on the motorcycle and starts shooting bad guys.
RYAN: Yes, they talked about it on Oprah.
CAROLINE: It’s a very cool moment, but I think I liked the fight scenes on the airplane and the train better, as well as a fabulous car chase scene that’s also in the trailer. The action is great overall, but what really made the movie exciting to me is the intrigue. You spend the whole time wondering if Tom Cruise is good or bad, or if he’s really who he says he is. You never know what’s going to happen next or how they’re going to survive. It’s an over-the-top thrill ride.
RYAN: Anyone else in the cast worth mentioning?
CAROLINE: Yes! Peter Sarsgaard and Viola Davis play CIA agents, Paul Dano is a scientist whiz kid and Maggie Grace from TV’s Lost has a small role as Cameron’s sister.
— BOTTOM LINE —
CAROLINE: It’s a real Hollywood summer blockbuster and tons of fun. It totally keeps you laughing and on the edge of your seat. I love that it’s combo of several genres – action, adventure, romance, intrigue and comedy. Is it totally ridiculous and implausible in many ways? Yes. Is the action insane and not realistic? Yes. But who cares? It’s a great summer movie and if you loved the trailer as much as I did, you will love this movie.
