In the Heart of the Sea Review

In the Heart PosterRYAN: This movie is basically a cop out for Moby Dick.

CAROLINE: Ok, bitter – party of one?

RYAN: (laughs) You’re right.  I didn’t like this movie and here’s why – it’s uneven.  There are moments, few, that stand out as well done and cool; some details are good.  But the majority is poorly edited – so chaotic at times, you can’t focus on what’s happening.  It’s too long and I was primarily bored.

CAROLINE: But it’s Ron Howard and Thor!

RYAN: I know!  I had high expectations, not to mention opening this time of year.  But LBH, let’s be honest, opening the week before Star Wars, no one is going to see this movie.  It’s going to drown in competition, pun intended.

CAROLINE: That’s a terrible pun.

RYAN: Thanks.  Some of the imagery in this is majestic and beautiful – and the whale effects look wonderful.  But the close up during the action scenes and water droplets on the camera lens are very distracting.

CAROLINE: I must admit, nothing about this movie is very appealing to me, even before hearing your review.

RYAN: I was quite excited to actually hear them shout, “There she blows!” during the film.  It reminds you what it’s all about.  I like the set up where we see author Herman Melville interviewing the man who who experienced the true story upon which he based Moby Dick. Those few scenes, woven throughout the narrative, are actually some of the better parts of the movie – possibly because they feature Ben Wishaw as Melville and Brendan Gleeson.

CAROLINE: They’re both great.

RYAN: The score is very repetitive and gets annoying after a bit.

CAROLINE: That doesn’t help things much.

RYAN: I’m disappointed.  I was really looking forward to this but it’s long and boring.  Plus – coming out at this time of year is just ridiculous, with all the awards contenders.
